I'm at my wits end.

I've tried clearing all the settings out, new profiles, everything, since ff3b4 the fonts have been like this across my 2 work machines. I had hoped it was a fluke, but reading google like that gives me a headache and it's still in RC1

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. start with new install and profile
2.
3.
Actual Results:
font weight is wrong on one machine

Expected Results:
pages that display the same

both machines are patched up to the same level, font collection on both are the same

(this is the worst bug ever, sorry)
Works here... I think you're missing a certain normal-weight font on the problem machine (my guess is Verdana) so you only have the bold version.

if it happens with all pages and all fonts, I'd suspect a screwy userContent.css

Either way because this doesn't happen on all machines (obviously) it's not a bug in the program, get support from http://support.mozilla.com
like I said the font sets are the same... the machines for all intents and purposes are identical, and it is exhibited in a new install/profile, where there is no userContent.css on either, there is literally no stone unturned, I've been trying to nail down whats causing it since I updated from ff3b3 to b5, and now RC1. B3 didn't do it and still doesn't (fonts display correctly on both machines)
Well... I dunno what FF was up to, but i went to the font prefs, unchecked "allow sites to pick fonts blah blah above", let it to it's thing, then changed it back and the fonts have the correct weight now.

Is there an old cache or something FF has for fonts that might have been interpreted differently, wrongly, between B3->B4?

at the very least, thank you for making me think :] I will reopen if it manifests again.

Resolution: --- → WORKSFORME
The screenshot you posted looks exactly like the ones in bug 428087 and the two bugs overall sound very similar, so I'm changing this from a WORKSFORME to a dupe of that so that readers of that bug can reference this bug and vice-versa.
Resolution: WORKSFORME → DUPLICATE
it does indeed, but the problem went away when i changed "Default Font" from times new roman to something else, and "allow pages to choose their own fonts", then changing them back, its as if the glyphs were cached somewhere i couldn't find, and it happened moving from b3 to b4, on the second machine i went directly to b4 and i didn't have that problem.

i really don't think it's a dupe, as the proposed fix in the other bug doesn't fit my scenario at all
One of the people in the other bug reported (in one of the forums) that doing something very similar to what you did fixed the problem, so I think it still may be related. I'm also not sure if the beta3/4/5 distinction is really relevant or if it was just incidental. What struck me the most about this is that everyone tried using new profiles to no avail, which rules out any sort of misconfiguration and caching on Firefox's end of things, but despite that, twiddling with the configuration in Firefox seemed to have an effect. <wild-speculation>So it could be possible that by adjusting things in Firefox, it was somehow triggering something else on a system level--maybe by accessing the font picker, it had triggered something in the Windows font manager that repaired the problem?</wild-speculation>
Any updates will be on bug #428087.
