This sounds similar to an issue I was having.. basically: 1. I had ffox 2 and ffox 3b5 installed in Vista Home Premium 2. I downloaded Firefox 3 on launch day (yesterday), then installed and tried to run it. 3. It crashed repeatedly and would never would start. 4. I uninstalled all previous versions of ffox from add/remove programs 5. Reinstalled ffox 3 and it did the same thing (repeated crashing, not launching) 6. I uninstalled ffox3 and this time reinstalled to new directory path (c:\program files\Mozilla Firefox 3\) 7. It launches and works great!
you know .. reading your version .. you're on linux.. my issue is likely unrelated.
How did you install Firefox 3? Was it via a tarball and installed over the top of the existing Firefox 2?
I unpacked tar.gz archive to a brand new directory.
This isn't a bug in the updater, so over Firefox::General. What linux distro are you using emdej ? Is Firefox 2 also running when you see this problem ?

Also, when you unpacked Fx3 into this new dir, did you explictly go "./firefox" in that dir ? Otherwise you're picking up whatever firefox is on the path.
Oh sorry, ignore comment #5. I was thinking this was another bug.

Product: Firefox → Toolkit
I'm not sure how this is possible without untarring over an existing Firefox install that had an update waiting to be applied since we store the updates in the installation directory.

emdej, can you try to reproduce with 3.5? Please be sure not to untar over an existing install.
