I think that a nice feature for a future version of Thunderbird would be to support OpenPGP natively (without to have external programs like GnuPG installed, like the already implemented support for S/MIME).
I think it's more importent than ever to offer this security features today.
Because many users are often deterred by the extra installation and complicated configuration. I think a direct implementation would animate more people to use mail encryption.
