Though it's probably by design...
There's really no reason for this to be by design. Just because most times you don't want to hide the subject doesn't mean that you never do.
in threaded mode, the twisty is associated with the subject column so we need to show the subject column for that at least. It's definitely by design...

Subject is also in general so central, i don't think we want so support removing it.
