After thunderbird start up you have to click twice on the agenda-pane to focus it. You can verify this behaviour by the "Delete" toolbar-button that is not activated until then.
This seems to work for me using Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091204 Lightning/1.0b2pre Thunderbird/3.0.

Anybody still having focus problems with the Today pane?

The elements on today pane seems take the focus immediately, but something strange happens, (that maybe is another bug) because if you add the "delete" button to the main toolbar, as suggested by Berend, it never becomes active clicking on an event when in mail mode, instead it happens immediately with tasks or with events but only when in calendar or task mode.

This is caused by the command handler not enabling the delete command for calendar items in mail mode.
