Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008052906 Firefox/3.0
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008052912 Firefox/2.0.0.12
Upon opening the 'about' dialog in the firefox 3 final (en-GB) build the about dialog displays 'Mozilla Firefox Version 3' yet the user agent displays as Firefox/2.0.0.12. The Windows version does NOT do this, and displays as 'Firefox/3.0' as you would expect.
Linux UA (firefox 3 final): 'Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008052912 Firefox/2.0.0.12'
Win32 UA: 'Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008052906 Firefox/3.0'
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Navigate to help --> 'About Mozilla Firefox' or check user agent
2.
3.
Actual Results:
useragent displays as firefox/2.0.0.12
Expected Results:
user-agent should display firefox/3.x?

Did you possibly unpack Firefox 3.0 into the same directory as Firefox 2 ?

I do not think this is possible.
I extracted firefox-3.0.tar.bz2 (en-GB, downloaded from mozilla-europe) into a newly created directory with no files inside, and then moved the contents to the newly created /opt/firefox and ran /opt/firefox/firefox.
I also repeated this process twice, and still the same result occurs.

In one profile I have:
Firefox
version 3.0.3
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092417 Firefox/3.0.3
...in the other one:
Firefox
version 3.0.3
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092417 Firefox/2.0.0.11

Ricky, Jaroslav, Do either of you use the UserAgent Switcher extension, or something equivalent ? Does the UA change if you start Firefox in its Safe Mode ?
See http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode but don't reset any settings.

In safe mode (with all add-ons disabled) I still get the improper user-agent.
I did not change the UA-string by myself.
The add-ons I'm using are Firebug, JavaScript Debugger, Live HTTP Headers, Web Developer.

Jaroslav, could you confirm that your two profiles (in comment #3) are on the same computer, same username, and a single Firefox install ? If so, this is a variety FrankenFox that I haven't heard of before.

Both shortcuts point to "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 3\firefox.exe". (I have even uninstalled FF2 and FF3b, just to be sure.)

Err... I have checked prefs.js and one profile contains this line:
user_pref("general.useragent.extra.firefox", "Firefox/2.0.0.11");
I swear I have no clue where it came from, I don't use any UA-altering extensions that I know of.

resolved - worksforme - as it seems unlikely that this is a widespread problem, and working out how the user pref got there is probably not practical.
