Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Select some text in a textarea 2. Note the color of the selected text 3. Open "Appearance" in system preferences 4. Choose a different highlight color 5. Bring firefox window back the the foreground to see the selected text Actual Results: Selected text color is unchanged. Expected Results: Selected text color changes to the chosen color.
Confirming using Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008061004 Firefox/3.0. The text highlight works fine in Safari.

For some reason, the text highlight is now working. I think I may have restarted the browser and that might have been why it started working. Michael: can you please check to see if that is the case on your machine? If so I will resolve this as WFM.
I reproduced this on another Mac computer. Restarting the browser does pick up the changed color, but every other OS X application receives the color change immediately.
