Looks like somewhere around 0.6 (there are limits to even my CVS archaeological curiosity), we marked the OS X Dock icon with a checkmark in a green rosette-thing to indicate new mail. These are the last remnants.

Probably "1. Patch 2. Build to be sure it works 3. Attach patch 4. Go to bed" would have been better than doing those in 1, 3, 4, 2 order.
