Affiliate buttons promoting FF2 are now outdated. I've identified the most popular FF2 buttons that need to be replaced and the FF3 buttons they need to be replaced with.

The replacements are the same size as their outdated counterparts but in some cases have different content.

I'm not sure what you want done here...

Are there some Mozilla sites that are using the old images and should be changed to use the new images, or are you wanting IT to redirect the old images to the new images, or what exactly?

These buttons are being used in the Affiliates Program on Spread Firefox. People have these buttons on their websites, blogs, etc. and we'd like to replace the outdated buttons they're using now with the new images. Let know if this needs further clarification...
Some of these aren't direct replacements... seems weird to be replacing images on people's websites with something that isn't just s/2/3/.

Yeah -- sucks, but it's not a good thing for us to update peoples websites for them. I think they should have to go and do it proactively.
I disagree. As long as we don't change the size of the button, rotation on our end is a feature, not a bug. We should be refreshing deployed buttons regularly.
Take these two buttons as an example:

old: http://sfx-images.mozilla.org/affiliates/Buttons/firefox2/468x60FF2_Orange.png
new: http://sfx-images.mozilla.org/affiliates/Buttons/firefox3/468x60.png

While the size is the same, the style, color, logo size, etc are all different. We have no idea how people are using these out there (people might be doing css spriting to just display the logo, for all we know). People might have a website themed for that specific color.

It just seems really out of place for us to automatically update peoples images, on their website, with out asking first. Since we can't ask everyone, I think we can't do it.

Another option is to dig through the logs for the top users and do some outreach to make sure they get updated.
I disagree again. These people opted in to our affiliates program, are registered members of Spread Firefox, (so presumably we could email them with a warning,) and have embedded our embed codes.

Other services do this all the time. See all the video services rolling out player updates that totally change the style and color of the flash player.

This is being way over-sensitive, I think. Those that don't like how the new images fit in can come to SFX and swap out or drop the image all together.

I think we should start rotating images on a regular basis, as frequently as we have resources to do so. Starting with updates for images that are 4 years old and advertise non-existent products seems like a fine place to start.
This is probably not a good forum to have this discussion, but I agree with Asa. It's an opt-in program, they can get a new button at any time. We changed the colors to match the palette of the Firefox 3 site redesign.

Most major affiliate programs often update their buttons for promotions, colors, etc. and to give a feeling that their program is fresh. Julianna has posted on the sfx group about swapping buttons and I will post today to planet. We can also post a notice on the affiliates page about what we're going to do.

Just to be clear, we're only talking about buttons that have a "Firefox 2" message on them - we are not touching other images.

can you guys re-assign this when you are ready for IT action?

they opt'd in for a Firefox 2 button, not a Firefox 3 one. I guess this is another place we need a terms of service.

If you guys think this is the right way to go, lets do it. Just wanted to raise another point of view.
Alex and Asa I just sent Juliana 2 new banners
120x240 1 is the old style with Firefox 3 and one is the new Green style with Firefox 3 as requested by Juliana

I can edit this one if you want ?

to say Firefox 3
As I said on the other bug (for a moment thinking it was this one) this is David Rolnitzky's territory, and has been for some time, so he should be the one to give the go-ahead. He's got my full backing on this, not that it matters but as a "peer" on this unofficial module, I think it's reasonable for me to say r=asa. (In case that wasn't clear, drolnitzky is the Owner of the Affiliates Program.)
Let's move forward on the find/replace per Juliana's instructions above. Thanks.

What's the progress on this? We're really hoping to get this going soon. Just wondering...
This is done. Changes should be live shortly.

Not sure anything has been swapped out here. What we need to do is make sure that the new buttons have the same filename as the old buttons.

So for example,

1.Old button -
http://sfx-images.mozilla.org/affiliates/Buttons/firefox2/ff2b80x15.gif
2. Replace with New button -
http://sfx-images.mozilla.org/affiliates/Buttons/firefox3/FF3b80x15_square.gif

The url should remain the same as the old button (#1), but just with the new image (#2)

From doing a few spotchecks, nothing has actually been switched.
[root@mradm02 Buttons]# md5sum firefox2/ff2b80x15.gif
8ddd512d5478334234766d380e0cc640 firefox2/ff2b80x15.gif
[root@mradm02 Buttons]# md5sum firefox3/FF3b80x15_square.gif
8ddd512d5478334234766d380e0cc640 firefox3/FF3b80x15_square.gif

Look replaced on the server... oremj: Is this fallout from your /data(_local)?/static stuff?
Just took a quick look at jslater's blog -- he still is showing the Firefox 2 button which should have been swapped:
http://www.intothefuzz.com/ (look at right sidebar towards the bottom).
The max-age on these is 5 days. Someone just needed to flush the NS cache.
