I have seen this before on Windows XP, and Vista, though not in FF. It may be something with the screen font settings, or something with the res, etc.
Can you give exact steps to reproduce so we can try it in FF?

No specific steps, cursor always seen in this shape in edit pane of Composer. I didn't note, when (from which version/time) cursor gets this shape, but this is recent change.

By steps, how do you open Composer, what do you type, in short, from Start of Thunderbird, to the first time the issue is seen.
Also, what vewrsion of Thunderbird are you using? You can find this out by clicking Help, About, then copy the text from there in to this window.

> how do you open Composer,
For example, ^M (make new message) and twice Tab (skip address and subject fields). Or you may press ^R (reply) on some letter.
> what do you type,
Nothing need to type, cursor always have such shape in edit pane.
> what vewrsion of Thunderbird
See line "Build Identifier" in Description (first report).

What ad-ons do you have, and have you run in Safe Mode?

Ops, sorry. I switch from Walnut (1.8.36) theme to default theme and then back (with intermediate TB restarts, of course) and cursor now looks fixed. Probably, TB randomly garbages cursor shape? I will watch this further.
Other add-ons are dictionaries and Talkback. No more.

I now know how to reproduce bug.
1. Open Composer.
2. Insert from clipboard unicode text with arabic scripting - for example (below excerpt from ru.wikipedia).
"
оригинальное имя = صدام حسين عبد المجيد التكريت
| портрет = Iraq, Saddam Hussein (222).jpg
"
Viola - cursor now crossed.

This appears now without these arabic chars. Appeared until I restarted TB.
Summary: Broken cursor in Composer? → Broken cursor in Composer
Comment 12•17 years ago
|

So, this is what happened.
I pasted the Arabic chars in to composer (see Comment #9), the weird effect appeared. Then, it was in every composer window (including new English char ones) until TB was restarted, then it was gone (until I pasted the Arabic in again). This happened in Safe Mode too.

Okay, so I'm not a computer person. How do I get my cursor to get back to "normal?" I have the cross on mine too.

So far as we can tell, you have to restart TB, until a patch can land for this issue.

Thanks! I'll be glad when they create a fix for it! It's driving me crazy. It's like there's lint on my cursor or something. I keep wanting to wipe off my screen. :)

Good news! I changed fonts yesterday and this morning when I logged on, the mark was gone. I'm good! Thanks!

Can you give some more information on that? What font were you using, what did you change to, and have you tried to reproduce again?

I changed the font to from times new roman to calibri. I still had the problem, but when I logged off last night and then logged back on this morning, it was gone. I'm afraid to try and reproduce it...

Logging off is a know workaround for this issue. Please attempt to repro this.

Okay, here's what I think I did. You give it a try. I changed the font from times new roman to calibri and later (I forgot), I clicked the restore defaults button and then logged of TB. I just changed it back to times new roman and still don't get the bug. Is it possible I picked it up from cutting and pasting something off a website into my email??? Arkady mentioned wikipedia. I use that a lot...

It seems like this happens when pasting certain chars (namely the Arabic in comment #9).
Comment 24•17 years ago
|

Yep. I think that's it exactly. I'll be more careful from now on.
