As per one of the remarks in bug #340535 I stopped the TSR process "Quickcam.exe" and used the "Check for updates" option in Thunderbird. The automatic update to 2.0.0.16 now completed successfully.

There is nothing fixed in thunderbird, you got it only working. fixed means that something got changed in the thunderbird source code. marking as dupe again

FYI: In one of the remarks of bug #340535 the TSR "communication_helper.exe" is mentioned. To the best of my knowledge this TSR is part of Skype. While having Thunderbird upgrade to 2.0.0.16 with "quickcam.exe" stopped I left "communication_helper.exe" running without any problem.
