RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 77811

People

(Reporter: r.wheaton, Unassigned)

Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko/2008070208 Firefox/3.0.1
Build Identifier: Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.16

Similar to bug 431101 but restricted to certain senders only. The files are downloaded correctly by Microsoft Oultook which I don't normally use because it
frustrates me in several ways. This suggests the bug is in Thunderbird. The last file causing this problem was 08whe01.pdf. It was renamed winmail.dat. If renamed back to its original name it still could not be read by Adobe.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Download an email with a pdf attached
2. Click on pdf
3. Adobe reports unknown format or corrupt file. The same happens if file is saved, even if renamed.
Actual Results:
Adobe reports unknown format or corrupt file.

Expected Results:
Normally Thunderbird will display contents of a pdf file using Adobe.
winmail.dat is an odd way used by Microsoft Outlook to send attachments. I forget how to turn it off on the sender-side, but a web search should turn up a solution pretty quickly, and I'd suggest asking that they do so -- chances are, the senders are having trouble sending attachments to other people as well.

Bug 360980 covers having Thunderbird support this format natively, and if you look there, you'll see a number of ways to decode the files.

the correct bug to dupe IMHO is the core bug 77811, the other is "only" dependent (and for Penelope)
