User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; hu-HU; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko/2008070400 SUSE/3.0.1-4.1 Firefox/3.0.1
Build Identifier: 2.0.0.16 (20080720)

Thunderbird under Linux displays a message on new mail arrival, but after a few seconds it disappears and after this there is no sign of having a new mail. This is very annoying, because every time one leaves the computer for a few minutes it is needed to check Thunderbird for new mail. There is an extension for tray notification, but that breaks Thunderbird's own message window containing sender/subject.

Thunderbird should manage new mail notification in the system tray itself, just as under windows.

I think the lack of this feature is nearly a blocking one for the next release.

bug 18732 is about the Gnome integration, but it's filed in SeaMonkey
This is true, I know that bug. Specifically I lack the feature under KDE for Thunderbird. Maybe the fix of that bug will fix this one as well, but not sure.
Should bug 18732 get moved to Thunderbird or MailNews Core to help it get more attention?

An extension does this:
http://moztraybiff.mozdev.org/

See also bug 325353, which may help.

The author of the moztraybiff extension commented in bug 18732 comment 28 that GTK should "soon" (three years ago) have support for tray icons, so that should have landed by now.
I broadened bug 18732 to KDE.
