We currently capture full pages and shrink them to the desired preview size. In most cases it's probably better to capture a smaller part, which in return wouldn't have to be shrunken as much. See also bug 445458.
this is more aggressive... I'll dogfood this for a day or two and then push it to the extension users.

I was afraid that the 16:9 format would look strange and that showing only 60% of the page width wouldn't work well on some sites. My own usage doesn't confirm this, and I haven't received a single complaint from the add-on users. The change to image/png shouldn't have been part of the previous patch, that's bug 447896.
