We want to ship Firefox 3 a good list of search engines for Occitan. We're going to work towards this in three phases. First, the localization team and Stas (Stas Malolepszy) will look at the market for the language and come up with a good set of search providers. Yannig, we'll need your input on this, the guidelines for making recommendations are on http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_web_services_guidelines. For en-US, we currently use this set, to which we can fall back in the case of lacking localized alternatives: Google, Yahoo, Amazon, Answers, CC, eBay, Wikipedia After we decided on a particular search engine, Stas will contact the owner and ask for permission, and for specifics like proper search flags. undefined, we'll likely need your help to at least get the contact information. Once we have a specification on what the searchengines for Occitan should look like, the localization team and Axel will work on an implementation on that. This should happen by the localization team creating and attaching patches for the desired changes, and requesting review from Axel. After a successful review, the localization team will land them. Please don't commit any modifications in l10n/oc/browser/searchplugins to the cvs repository without a patch reviewed by Axel, Stas or someone else appointed by Stas or SethB. The data here is sensitive to users and our search partners, thus the extra care here.

The only search engine I know in Occitan is Google.
The language is an important criterion of choice, but not the only one ;) Would you like to use any plug-ins that are geographically more adequate for Occitan users than the en-US defaults? At the risk of oversimplifying things: how about the plug-ins we use for the French build? (http://mxr.mozilla.org/l10n-central/source/fr/browser/searchplugins/list.txt). Maybe you know of some interesting and searchable resources in Occitan that could fit in here as well? Just to give some ideas that are on my mind: an on-line dictionary or an on-line library of electronic texts/books in Occitan. Feel free to suggest yours :) I think that this is a great opportunity for us to empower Occitan speakers.
Wikipedia and Google do exist in Occitan so it could be find to have them. Otherwise, there is no really other plug-in I think at for now. I don't know any on-line library for e-books in Occitan.
Thanks Yannig. And what do you think about including some of the plug-ins from the French build? For example, like this: general search: * google -> google (oc) * yahoo -> yahoo.fr e-commerce: * Amazon -> alapage.fr or fnac.com * eBay -> ebay.fr specific interest search: * wikipedia -> wikipedia (oc) * CC -> ...? * Answers -> (remove?) Do you know any searchable dictionaries for Occitan? Or would you like to keep Creative Commons and (possibly) Answers?
The best Occitan searchable dictionary I know is http://oc.wiktionary.org (far from being complete but at least, it's a good one). There is a French version of Amazon, could be fine. Otherwise, alapage.fr or fnac.com would be fine too. OK for everything but what is CC?
CC is Creative Commons: http://search.creativecommons.org/ For Amazon, we're currently having a discussion about in the French build as well. What is your take on this? Which site would you prefer?
When we search "occitan", there are far more results on Amazon than on Alapage so I think it could be better.
Actually, I can't confirm this. This is what I see: * Amazon.fr: 16 results * Alapage.fr: 764 results * Fnac: 63 results Amazon: http://www.amazon.fr/s/ref=nb_ss_w?__mk_fr_FR=%C5M%C5Z%D5%D1&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=occitan&x=0&y=0 Alapage: http://www.alapage.com/-/MultiRecherche/?id=6141223716135&donnee_appel=ALASQ&choix=fulltext&ap=1&pos=2&cat=&type=0&fulltext=occitan&x=0&y=0 Fnac: http://recherche.fnac.com/search/quick.do?text=occitan&category=all&SID=0ec02e04-bd58-b8fc-bfdf-63dd75f22a6c&UID=003cc0f85-e63b-8b03-55cc-67c72022993d&Origin=FnacAff&TTL=121020081108&OrderInSession=0&bl=HGACrera&submitbtn=Ok Also, this search should be generally useful for Occitan speakers as well (even when they seek to buy something in French or other languages). It seems that Amazon.fr is slightly cheaper for shipping to Spain and Italy (as of today: 4.5 euro + 1.55 for each article [1]) compared to 10.80 euros in Alapage (for commands below 100 euros [2]), but Alapage seems to have the opinion of having better choice of articles. On the left-hand side (Amazon): * Toutes les rubriques * Livres en français (1 182) * Livres en anglais (23) * Musique (11) * Jeux et Jouets (1)
Aaaaaa :) Thanks, I haven't noticed that. OK, let's go for Amazon, it seems to be a better-suited choice fro Occitan users. Summary: general search: * google -> google (oc) * yahoo -> yahoo.fr e-commerce: * Amazon -> Amazon.fr * eBay -> ebay.fr specific interest search (*not final*): * wikipedia -> wikipedia (oc) * CC -> CC? * Answers -> oc.wikitionary.org?
specific interest search (*not final*): * wikipedia -> wikipedia (oc) => fair enough * CC -> CC? => why not. * Answers -> oc.wikitionary.org? => why not. Couldn't there be a wikipedia/wiktionary cross-search?
(In reply to comment #11) > * Answers -> oc.wikitionary.org? => why not. Couldn't there be a > wikipedia/wiktionary cross-search? I don't think it's possible. We'll need to include both if we want to go with both of them. If you're OK with the list from comment 10, would you mind preparing the patch? You can reuse the French plug-ins for Yahoo, Amazon, eBay and Wikipedia (changing important details, of course), which can be found here: http://mxr.mozilla.org/l10n-central/source/fr/browser/searchplugins/ Don't forget to modify the list.txt as well. Let me know should you need any help with this (I'm stas on IRC).

Fixed on CVS as well :) Yannig, it would be great if you could verify in a nightly build if everything's OK (and add the verified1.9.0.4 keyword if yes). Thanks!
