When I log on to thunderbird the system takes four to five minutes to start up. It then sometimes will tell me I have hundreds of unread e-mails when I only have two or three and or does not allow me to open them unless I go into another local folder then return to the inbox but returning to the inbox takes another couple of minutes. Also I cannot use the get mail icon to check for messages. My wife uses thunderbird on the same computer but experiences none of these problems. Please help as it is driving me bonkers!

Does File | Compact folders help perhaps? That cleans out old deleted mails from the disk physically.

=> incomplete due to lack of response
questions to consider:
are you using pop(+webmail) or imap?
also, do you see the problem if you try the current beta of version 3?
