Two of the 399941 reftests fail on Mac OS X:

  399941-8
  399941-9

The two tests use Phoenician and Cuneiform characters so I doubt anyone has fonts for these on their machine other than silly folks like me.

I'm using two George Douros fonts, Aegean and Akkadian, which are available here:

In both FF3 and trunk, with the first-letter selector the background does not show for the full line height. This seems like an actual bug.

In FF3, the first-letter selector selects the first character only, on trunk the first three. I'm assuming this was the original fix in bug 399941.
Top image users first-letter selector, bottom one uses span. Notice the difference in the height of the background green.
Mac OS X 10.4.11/Intel
Attached image screenshot, 399941-9
10.5.4, Intel, with sans-serif (Helvetica) as default font-choice.
top is the span (399941-9-ref.html), bottom is ::first-letter.

Wit serif (Times) as default, I get the same as John on 10.4.
This is reminiscent of bug 294733. I can't reproduce it with either 399941-8 (which I have font coverage for on OS X, with the font MPH 2B Damase) or 399941-9 (which I don't, so the text is replaced with hex-boxes)
Severity: normal → S3
