On 2 occasions, when there was apparently a power surge in my DSL that crashed my digital modem, the following items in Thunderbird just disappeared: ALL email accounts and ALL account settings and ALL the options settings. I got the Thunderbird "set up an account" "wizard" and had to reinstall all the option settings, all the email accounts and their settings, all my "message filters." This took over two hours.
Rebooting the digital modem got me back on the Internet with Firefox, but my Thunderbird stuff was just gone.
What did NOT disappear was the Thunderbird address book and the Thunderbird sign-in passwords.
I love Thunderbird, but, if this happens a third time, I will make Outlook my email program.

Software shouldn't shed its data when a digital modem crashes. If it does, there should be AN EASY WAY to RESTORE EVERYTHING that doesn't take over two hours.
You used IMAP then? To be honest I don't think the digital modem crash causes Thunderbird to forget all the settings. Normally things like that only happen when the whole OS crashes or a power failure happens (while Thunderbird is running). You can also take a look at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Recovering_a_profile_that_suddenly_disappeared for the possibilities to restore your settings the next time...
