Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.2) Gecko/2008091618 Firefox/3.0.2
Build Identifier:
I use Lightning on Thunderbird 2.0.0.17 (binary build downloaded from mozilla), on MEPIS Linux 7.0, KDE. I can attach documents to a task or event by clicking on the attach button. Then I drag a file to the attachment dialog box. I can open some files (e.g. .pgn images) but not others (e.g. Open Office files). I _can_ open these files when they are attached to a mail, so Thunderbird knows how to handle them. The correct file association is also set in KDE. It looks like Lightning uses the Gnome config center to determine how to handle file associations, but I would rather it used the Thunderbird settings or better still, that it is KDE aware.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.attach an Open Office document to a task
2.double click the document
3.nothing happens
Actual Results:
nothing. When firing up Thunderbird in a console, no output is generated
Expected Results:
Document should open in Open Office (or any other corresponding application)
The behaviour of not opening all file types looks similar to what I experienced in Evolution installed under KDE. The application depends on the Gnome settings and is not aware of it running under KDE. At least Thunderbird has the option of manually associating file types with an application, so I think Lightning should use the Thunderbird Mimetypes.rdf store.

If I understand you correctly, you want to attach files to events/tasks. This is not supported right now, only url links currently work. See bug 168680.
If I misunderstood you, please reopen.

Yes, I am sorry. It is a duplicate. I was put on the wrong foot, since adding a file:///home/MyUser/Whatever.png works, i.e. it opens up in an image viewer, whereas an other file type does not open up. Seeing you guys are still struggling with this, I understand this is to be expected...
