I've determined that, after installing the upgrade, FF stops handling the network after a few page requests. "A few" can mean as little as one or two pages. Using tcpdump, this event looks like this (this is a complete FF session, from start to hang):
# tcpdump -ni ppp0 port 80 or port 53
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode
listening on ppp0, link-type LINUX_SLL (Linux cooked), capture size 96 bytes

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start Firefox
2. Surf to a website
3. make a few clicks there -> hang
Actual Results:
Firefox hangs and will not surf any other web page as well while eating (on my computer) some 10% CPU time over hours.

Expected Results:
Firefox keeps working normally, and terminates without a problem when asked to terminate.

If one clicks the "close" button in the window manager, Firefox keeps running in the background and must be killed from the shell. The problem occurred after upgrading from 2.0.0.16 to 2.0.0.17. An upgrade to 3.x is not possible at the moment because the system requirements of 3.x are incompatible with Debian Etch (which is what I'm using).
Please try starting in Safe Mode, and with a new profile. Also, check firewalls, internet connections, etc.
Ok... trying with a new, empty profile in safe mode (I assume -safe-mode) worked, but this is unsatisfactory. It looks like going SSL immediately provokes the problem, and, fwiw, initially, some of the libs were inaccessible to FF (I fixed that by adding FF's installation path to the system's config and ran 'ldconfig' again.

I now checked which other libs might be missing, but didn't find any (or at least, not in the top level directory. I'm currently using Opera on the same system for the same purposes, which doesn't have any of these problems (at least), but would (obviously) like to switch back to FF ASAP.

Please find a sane way to upgrade w/o losing "everything", and/or some better debug&repair mechanisms for Joe Average User. Thanks!
ok, debugged more: it seems to be this problem: bug #456705
The fix on bug #456705 makes this a duplicate.
