User-Agent: Opera/9.51 (Windows 98; U; de) Build Identifier: Firefox 2.0.0.17 Hi! I´m using an old PIII-machine with Win98SE (enough power for basic surfin and mailing; upgrade to Ffx 3.x isn´t possible). The german Firefox 2.0.0.16 (german) worked fine, but after the latest update to 2.0.0.17 the browser crashes right after the start by calling a system-failure. So I´ve downloaded the latest Ffx-installer, but the browser crashes again. Can I have my Ffx 2.0.0.16 back? I can´t find it on your system. Now I use Opera9 (sorry for that...). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Cleaning up registry 2.Reinstalling downloaded version of Firefox 2.0.0.17 3.Reboot system Actual Results: Firefox still crashes Expected Results: Working fine as x.16 did. After the crash Win98 tells following system-message: FIREFOX verursachte einen Fehler durch eine ungültige Seite in Modul KERNEL32.DLL bei 0167:bff7b9a6. Register: EAX=00000000 CS=0167 EIP=bff7b9a6 EFLGS=00000246 EBX=00000000 SS=016f ESP=0201fc1c EBP=0201fd08 ECX=00000010 DS=016f ESI=0461675c FS=67b7 EDX=8628391c ES=016f EDI=04616740 GS=0000 Bytes bei CS:EIP: ff 76 04 e8 13 89 ff ff 5e c2 04 00 56 8b 74 24 Stapelwerte: 00ef51a0 601b4c87 0461675c 04616740 60322920 00884ca4 04616740 603af935 60322920 00885afe 0201fc54 80000000 0474e690 04730c90 603b9c20 0201fc6c
Do you use the foxyproxy addon (safemodeüupdate of the addon will fix it) ? Run Firefox in the firefox safemode : http://kb.mozillazine.org/safe+Mode if that doesn't help try the profilemanager and create a new profile: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_manager and all old releases should be still on the ftp server (ftp.mozilla.org)

I had the same problem. Running Win 98SE on an AMD K6-2 500 machine. Firefox Ver 2.0.0.17 is not compatible with Win 98. Doesn't anyone test the new versions on older OS's prior to releasing them? Did nasty things to my computer. Not only would Firefox not work, after trying to start Firefox, none of my internet apps would work (Outlook Express, IE, etc..) Alt-Ctrl-Del to shut down Firefox caused a complete crash. On reboot I uninstalled Firefox. Other apps ok. Installed older version Firefox 2.0.0.10. Same problem. Uninstalled. Installed version 2.0.0.16 and started in safe mode. Selected "disable all apps" and restarted in normal mode. So far everthing works as before. Have not reenabled apps yet.
I suppose the bug was on FoxyProxy. I´ve disabled some add-ons (Temporary Inbox, Minimap, i-Lighter, FireFTP, Clipmarks and FoxyProxy) after starting Ffx 2.0.0.17 in safemode; now the browser works like charm. Thanks for your quick help. Opera is back in sleepmode ;-)

Upgrade FoxyProxy to at least version 2.8.6 and you should be fine.
Please reopen this bug 457693. This is not seem to be a duplicate of 456705, which was a running FF involving foxyproxy. I've never heard of foxyproxy. Mine never ran after the update, except in Win98SE safe mode. I also reported at http://support.mozilla.com/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?comments_parentId=172340&forumId=1 Three programs hung while logging out of my main Win98SE user profile, an unknown, ~DDE (server?), and ~XP.com. Seeing that last filename, I wonder if the problem is that the 2.0.0.17 update installed XP components, which I have previously seen to corrupt Win98SE in updates of another program. After logging out, the default user desktop was suddenly filled with icons. I immediately hit the reset button and rolled back the registry before the next reboot. Firefox 2.0.0.17 did open in Win98SE safe mode. So far I have been unable to find out how to uninstall just the update. Gave up and reinstalled 2.0.0.16. Following the reinstall, a scan with System File Checker showed no changes. 2.0.0.16 worked with no more than minor problems. Here are the installed addons: CookieCuller Iconoclast IP2Location Screengrab! TinyUrl Creator Toggle Search
If this issue is gone in Safe Mode, than it is most likely a problem with an extension. Please disable them one by one to find which, then contact the developer of the extension.
>Please reopen this bug 457693. Why should i do that ? comment#3 confirmed that this is correct duped. You are not the reporter of this bug and if you got a difference problem then don't comment on this bug.
So the way bugzilla works, if the first reporter is satisfied, but others with the same symptoms (but not fixes) aren't, the bug closes anyway. Ok. I disabled all the addons, reapplied the update 2.0.0.17 and the same things happened; corruption followed by crash. I also had the same same thing happen as Benny where the internet was disconnected. Benny couldn't get the 2.0.0.16 to work again without disabling apps. I could, but maybe that was because I rolled back the registry.
Bugzilla is not for technical support or help for users. It's a tool for the developers to track their work. A bug is created for one issue, multible issues in one bug report are invalid for example. Now the bug gets triaged by me and other people and after that if the bug is valid, a developer may fix this single issue. For this case ; BeGr reported a problem, we identified his issue as dupe of bug 456705. Now the bug is closed as dublicate. If you have different issues then do not comment in this bug because those comments are unwanted. In your case follow my comment#1 in this bug and if the safemode or new profile doesn't help, open a new bug.
