Installation process appears to be normal until I try to open the browser. The Firefox icon then appears briefly in the dock and NOTHING happens. Perhaps my operating system is too old (???). Obviously my OS a little long in the tooth (like me!)

I'm glad that Firefox2 works for you ! We dropped the support of OS X 10.39 and Windows 98 with Firefox3 and there are many reasons for this. You should consider upgrading to a later OS X version :-) marking invalid because this is no bug on our side and fixed is only used if something got changed in the source code.
