Every time a thread is deep the subjects are hidden.
The tree view could flatten the tree afert a configurable amount of nested messages.

I don't agree with the solution displayed in the Expected Results: above. Progressive indent is bound to get rounded to the maximum indent available where the user is neither able to read the whole subject nor to distinguish the threading:

An alternative is to allow a user to locally override References: and In-Reply-To: by attaching a new flag at certain messages where she thinks that the subject actually drifted. See bug 1685466.
