With MozMill in Thunderbird, it is not possible to bind the DOM explorer to a window other than the main mail window. Steps to reproduce: 1) Start up MozMill in Thunderbird. 2) Open up MozMill interface 3) Open up address book window 3) Go into MozMill and start the DOM explorer. MozMill hooks into the main mail window, rather than the address book window. I have even tried starting with -addressbook. Although I've referenced the address book here, the biggest issue by far would be the compose window where we are likely to need to do lots of things.
