If Eudora is left running one can see the memory used by the system continually going up, when it reaches with 500MB of the total RAM available Vista start acting up;
IE will not come up;
All selected mail look the same.
Updating the screen starts failing.
after additional time the system stops responding and the OS becomes unresponsive the only way to get control back is to physically power off the PC, it will not shutdown or respond to other request.
If one shuts down Eudora before the OS stops working the increasing use of RAM stops but remains at that high level until a re-boot.
I have Vista 32 bit Enterprise with SP1. The PC has 3GB of RAM
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Boot computer
2.Start up Eudora
3.Wait about 30 minutes and Vista is starting to fail.
Actual Results:
Eudora display became unresponsive, Vista became unresponsive and would not re-start or shut down.
Expected Results:
Continued functioning, system RAM usage remain steady, system remain responsive.

Any other Vista users out there seeing this? Also please make sure you are running the latest version (Eudora 8.0.0b4).
Thanks, Matt

I did try B4 and it still has the problem but it takes a lot longer for it to fail. After about 6 Hours running it had not completely hosed Vista but it was close, the screen would not update it's display correctly, memory usage had gone from 900MB to 2.1GB, the PC had a hard time shutting down. With Beta 3 it would get to this stage in less than an hour. I have several PC's with XP they do not have this problem, it's only on my Vista Enterprise SP1 PC.

Also, I'd be interested in knowing it this problem is present in Thunderbird 3.0 Alpha 3 ('Shredder'). Please see http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/early_releases/downloads.php
Please let us know.
Thanks, Matt

cecil, can you get a crash report id when using B5?
And if possible (follow up to comment 3) using Thunderbird beta 2?

I just tried Thunderbird B3 and no problems as far as growing memory consumption and the system hanging, but on Beta 5 of Penelope I still have the same problems.
Now when using B3 through B5 there is no crash with errors, the memory consumption keeps going up until the whole system freezes, no errors or any kind.

In the next day or two I will try it on Window 7, also I will try enabling emulation and set it up so it runs as a Xp application and give the results back.

Eudora 8 beta 5 uses the source code for Thunderbird 3 beta 1. So if you see the same problem under TB 3b1 then this is a problem with base Thunderbird, and not Eudora/Penelope in particular.

I changed the properties of the icon so the program runs under Xp emulation, all the problems went away. After two days of Beta 5 running continuously the memory usage has remained steady with Vista Enterprise. The high CPU usage is also gone.
I installed Beta 5 in a Windows 7 PC and again set the emulation to Xp, the results were the same, no loss of memory, no high CPU usage, this PC has been running Beta 5 for two days with no problems at all.

In the config editor, could you try setting mail.winsearch.enable to false (if it is true), then restarting and running it without XP compat mode for a while?

Cecil, if you get to the point of reproducing the crash, please use b5 https://wiki.mozilla.org/Eudora_Releases
beta 5 will produce a usable crash report and you can post the report id here.
info at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad#Viewing_reports
(but getting crash id using error console won't work in eudora - use one of the other methods)

My guess is that this is related to Windows Desktop Search. Please try disabling that as Sid suggests in Commment #9 (try setting mail.winsearch.enable to false ) then see if you see the same problem.
Thanks, Matt

#9 It would be nice to try suggestion on message #9 but since it was turned off to begin with there is nothing for me to do.
#10 As stated in my comments B5 has the same problems, there is no crash of Penelope, the whole OS dies with no error messages from anyone, the OS just bleeds to death as it runs out of RAM, this is for both Vista Enterprise and Windows 7.
I think your clue is that when turning Xp emulation all the problems go away and the software totally behaves, so what is different about Xp Emulation?
Is there not a daily build? Having to wait months for the next beta makes me feel like this is not getting anywhere, surely lot's of bugs has been solved since B5 so why is the software not out there where it can be easily found?

Cecil,
In comment 5 you said that you don't get the bug with "Thunderbird B3". Which exact beta version of TB was that? If it was TB 3 beta 2, can you try this out with TB 3 beta 1?
