Canada's cross-country skiers will be led by an enhanced coaching structure= that brings more than 30 years of experience, while also having access to a ful= l-time technical support group, and an intergrated support team - all critical res= ources essential to preparing for podium performances. "Canada's cross-sountry skiers have been on a steady rise up the internatio= nal rankings, and are now regularly knocking on the door of the international podium at a= ll levels," said Al Maddox, executive director, Cross Country Canada, in a media releas= e. "Through the generous support and leadership of Own the Podium, we can now deliver t= he world-leading resources our athletes need to gain a competitive advantage and better prep= are to reach our goal of regularly climbing onto the podium with the leading natio= ns in our sport." Dave Wood, who has been the head coach of the National Ski Team for the las= t decade, will be advanced into the role of team leader. Wood will be responsible for= leading the team into all major international competitions including World Champion= ships and the Olympic Winter Games. While taking care of all organization, plann= ing and logistics of the training and competition schedule, Wood will also supervis= e all technical support services and provide strategic advice in all aspects of = program execution while collaborating with other National Ski Team coaches on daily= program delivery. Arild Monsen has been recruited from Molde, Norway to guide the Senior Worl= d Cup and Olympic Team. An accomplished athlete on the Norwegian National Team f= rom 1982-1990, Monsen competed in three World Championships and was a wax technician for t= he Norwegians from 1993-97. An international technical delegate on the World Cup from 199= 7-2006, Monsen was chief of competition at the Norwegian National Championships and= has=20 coached Team Trondelag in Norway over the past two seasons. He has also enj= oyed=20 a number of successful World Cup results. Monsen will play a critical role = in guiding Canada's Senior World Cup team while in charge of all details in the day-to= -day=20 high-performance program within the field of play. Eric de Nys will continue holding the coaching reigns as Development Team C= oach. During his four-year reign in the national program, he has coached many Ca= nadian athletes to significant jumps in performance while competing at the Haywood= NorAm's; Under-23 World Championships; and World Cup competitions. "World-leading coaching, and a strong support team are core to ensuring Can= ada's cross-country ski athletes will be ready to play their part in helping the= Canadian team achieve excellence, and own the podium in 2010," said Maddox during a = media conference on the roof top of The Alberta Hotel Building in downtown Calga= ry, symbolizing Cross Country Canada's objective of the refined support team to lead them t= o the podium. Canada's Para-Nordic Ski Team will also benefit from additional resources t= hrough a revamped support team. Kaspar Wirz, who has been the head coach since 199= 6, will also be promoted to the role of team leader. Wirz has led Canada's Para-Nor= dic Ski Team to multiple podium performances at the last three Paralympics and four= World Ski Championships. Robin McKeever, who has racked up seven Paralympic medals as a guide for hi= s brother Brian, will take over the role as technique coach. McKeever is a nine-time = able-bodied Canadian Champion and a member of the 1998 Olympic Team. Celine Feagan will advance into her second year as biathlon specialist with= the=20 Para-Nordic squad. Feagan has more than 13 years of coaching experience, ra= nging from the club level to high-performance in Alberta and British Columbia. F= eagan has worked with the Senior National Biathlon Team from 2004-2006 both as c= oach=20 and physiotherapist where she travelled to several IBU World Cups and Europ= a Cups. Equally as important as the coaches is the the increased capacity for techn= ical=20 support provided to both the National Ski Team and Para-Nordic Ski Team. An extremely technical sport with multiple disciplines in variable conditio= ns, Cross Country Canada will send seven technicians to support major events such as = World Championships and Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, while up to four te= chnicians will be on the World Cup tour, and one technical team member at each domest= ic event. Technicians will focus on constant ski testing and ski waxing. Graham MacLean has been added as a full-time coordinator of technical servi= ces of the National Ski Team. While working with the entire technical support team= , MacLean will be responsible for ski preparation at specified training camps and com= petitions, along with research development and technical readiness for 2010. Ian Daffe= rn will continue his role as head wax technician for the Para-Nordic Team. In addition to coaching and technical services, Canada's Nordic athletes wi= ll also have full access to a leading Integrated Support Team consisting of sport s= cience, health and sports psychology who will ensure the athletes are race ready. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~= ~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~= ~~~~~ Quick Links Home [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=3D001fVrrmjys7H1s5V_6vBx7-ALBVllpxqrB6fI5BgxV= MZbtk1-W8pDYXoyoe94HPbzOidKah-RYjMoBThOXpi7nKQytcwzkWsPro38s1F-Z6Nimpf5bTJn= 2eQ=3D=3D] About [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=3D001fVrrmjys7H00QUUybawX9RHn6iov2rUMkONDeav= lcIFVoNp5AUOQ8wNKhNNnJJv0TZK0z-OfbkJnIVmvNbS3N4jLTkOTj5q38GZKglQgbURfKzjQ8x= tQXHstfj3KfrxUPhCAxWGqDxp9mY3Gw0Z9PDPn3B-DFEEv] Membership [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=3D001fVrrmjys7H1NtQCmIlm0-JWKU-fx7-bbv1= nYA04dhvk7fh_r7xI8M-Ovb50-BnjflHCJ9iS968vTKqRJQ7rcyEDCwb39mrJ2bdkTYjQ64STYF= 2E1YB9LHs76TR4QU1rWdBI0THTp04To6WDBzWSug1YzVZkukeyZhdCI9dN77VE=3D] Contact Us [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=3D001fVrrmjys7H09vzZg_g3bZKk0rSmJK_3lin= TtZHyNnUC8f3q--tG4Sm9kq_Qe3dZBOo-OF9xF0bO-vKPrDqCjs-_wJMF7FvHNS5aqdIae850wm= 4eYw_d6O4ID8cVdqkTjXUZyGS-x6DkikYIzcG3sZpOIC15SDwhr] Sea to Sea to Sea [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=3D001fVrrmjys7H2dTxUGnvMtEkXuwdO= -G4t_Z0ysrMQG5-7ADspw6YQ_k8xi51E5046KAORazuxWbuOtH4sw_M7ZFJcxaNd1ybWxtypwt6= WSCgbgAz9lBNPzNT_AOmiFLYX8_SlinANoWsigFzjC65kEE1Ssy2cW0fNa61zhZX0ncxw=3D] Think about signing up your club today! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~= ~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~= ~~~~~ Valued Partners and Sponsors Funding Partners: * Sport Canada * Own the Podium * Jemini Foundation * National Cross Country Development Association Gold Partners: Silver Partners: Podium Partners: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~= ~~~~~ Cross Connections October 2008 Co-editors: Chris Dornan and Ashley Wright ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~= ~~~~~ Dear Cross Connections Subscriber, I hope you enjoy our new look to Cross Connections. But as much as the two shared a passion for the sport, they also feared the= y were going to lose their second home. Just after Christmas last year, the news spread fast that Hardwood Hills, t= he cross country ski centre with the best-groomed, most extensive trail system in so= uthern Ontario, was going out of business. The employees had just received their pink slips. The owners, who had estab= lished Hardwood Hills as a ski centre in the early 1980s, said it was shutting dow= n as=20 soon as the snow melted in April. It was sad news. It meant that hundreds of youngsters would have to find an= other place to learn to ski, and the 1,000 skiers who regularly turned up on Sat= urdays and Sundays would have to go elsewhere. "It was pretty simple. If we didn't step in and take this place over it was= going to die," said Sasseville, who has coached every level of skiing in Canada s= ince=20 1976, and has been a colour analyst for the sport of cross-country skiing w= ith CBC since 1998. "Mike (Badham) and I went out to find an investor group with a = plan=20 to save the place and grow it." Sasseville and Badham quickly achieved their mission of finding an 11-membe= r investor group to purchase the 35 acres of land which was previously owned by Kim an= d Dave Viney, and develop a plan to lease the remaining 278 acres from the Simcoe = County and Oro-Medonte township. They raised several hundred thousand dollars from investors and more money = from=20 skiers buying long-term memberships, with perks like a parking spot and a l= ocker. Then they had to make a deal on the land. They met Harry Hughes, mayor of t= he township of Oro-Medonte. "It took a long time to get things moving, but we were finally able to clos= e on=20 the sale in February," said Sasseville. "The keys were handed over to us in= May=20 which was just in time to open the doors to a new mountain bike operation i= n the summer." Originally just a cross-country ski venue, the newly coined Hardwood Ski an= d Bike opened with 88 kilometres of routing on 30 kilometres of actual trails, the= se are used for mountain biking and cross-country ski trails - all are named after= Olympic sites beginning with 1994 Lillehammer, Norway up to Sochi, Russia in 2014 -= ensuring year-round enjoyment by area residents. Sasseville and his crew have not stood still since opening the doors on May= 1. In addition to refurbishing the existing terrain, they have spent the summer m= onths renovating the lodge which also complements two houses and a wax shed on t= he property that guests can already enjoy. Just in time for the group's October 16 grand opening with more than 80 mem= bers=20 in the local community who were instrumental in saving the facility, Hardwo= od welcomed three new groomers for their winter operation including a Piston Bully 400,= a Yamaha Rhino and a Yellowstone Ginzugroomer. "These new groomers will allow us to groom every kilometre of trail every d= ay to the best of our ability," said Sasseville, who will share his time as the = president and general manager of the club, with also helping to coach the high-perfor= mance program. "That is our commitment to our guests." The benefits will extend beyond well-groomed trails. Hardwood Ski and Bike = has also re-established its night-skiing program during the week on more than two ki= lometers of trails. Lights are being installed on many of the trails allowing them t= o open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday. The extended hours will be sure to benefit not only working professionals b= ut also the strong programs already in place. Team Hardwood, which is led by full-t= ime employee and coach Mike Doble, currently has more than 30 athletes involved in its p= rogram. The team has a strong feeder system with more than 200 Jackrabbits already = taking their first steps in developing into the next generation of Canada's elite = athletes. With the Hardwood Ski and Bike team quickly ticking off items on its immedi= ate list of To-Do's in order to return it back one of North America's top ski areas,= it has ambitious plans for the future. "Within the next 10 years we would like to build a new lodge, add accommoda= tions and construct an event centre which we believe will help us bring back rac= e opportunities," said Sasseville. "Our long-term plan is to build a ski tunnel and we have a= lready been to Finland to investigate the ski tunnel operation they have in place.= " The track to the future is shining bright on Hardwood Hills Ski and Bike, a= nd most importantly, is being trusted to enthusiastic leaders. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~= ~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~= ~~~~~ Choose CCC Mosaik MasterCard - Help Fund Skier Development in Canada Support the development of young skiers across Canada through the exclusive= Cross Country Canada Mosaik=AE MasterCard=AE*.
