User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:188.8.131.52) Gecko/2008092417 Firefox/3.0.3 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:184.108.40.206) Gecko/2008092417 Firefox/3.0.3 I created a local ".url" (weblink) to a webpage I wanted direct access to. I wanted to put it on my 'quick launchpad' and on my FF Bookmarks. I created the .url file and got the icon I wanted from an exe file on Discover's site. ("http://www.discovercard.com/customer-service/security/deskshopInstall.exe"). I extracted the icon and saved it as a ".ico" file in a local directory (Documents\My icons). I created the .URL webshort-cut, then used "Properties" to change the icon to the saved Icon I wanted (rather than the generic ".url" icon that is normally displayed). I dragged it to my quicklaunch pad, and it displayed and worked perfectly. HOWEVER... dragging it to my FF Bookmarks list didn't save any of my local information -- it didn't save the name of the shortcut -- instead renamed it to the filename part of the URL, AND it dropped the icon -- replacing it with a generic yellow star. While I could change the name back to the desired name using properties, there seems to be no way to change the icon back to the orange "D" I had gone to some length's to extract and save. In fact, there seems to be no way for a user to save a local shortcut retaining the local short-cut's name and icon -- and while the name can be corrected, the icon cannot. There doesn't appear to be a workaround for this. The contents of the file "Discover Secure Number.URL" are as follows: [InternetShortcut] URL=https://deskshop.discovercard.com/thincard/main_thinclient.html IconIndex=0 IconFile=C:\Home\law\Documents\My icons\deskshopInstall_100.ico Modified=B024ED7B303AC90170 There are 2 parts to this bug -- 1, it doesn't save the user's local shortcut name when transfering it to the bookmark list (which can be worked around by renaming), but worse -- it doesn't keep the user's desired icon and there doesn't seem to be a way to work around this. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Create local web shortcut or link with custom icon 2. Try to add to bookmarks (I used drag-n-drop) 3. Actual Results: all localized bookmark information was lost Expected Results: Bookmark name should have been taken from the name of the web.url shortcut filename (not it's internal content), and the user provided icon should be saved as a user-provided icon (not to be over-written by website updates). since it loses the user's icon, and there is no work-around, I'm marking this as 'major' (major within the domain of how bookmarks & shortcuts should work).
the name part is bug 237944. changing title to reflect remaining issue.
