BUILD: 200071810 STEPS TO REPRODUCE: Open the attached testcase Click "click" text Double click "dblclick" text and perform the rest of the events in the same fassion. EXPECTED RESULTS: Each time you perform an event a dialog box should pop up informing you which event just occured. ACTUAL RESULTS: Nothing will happen.
Attached file testcase —
Why should the COL get the event? The element visually on top is either the TD or the text in the TD. The COL is not an ancestor of either of those nodes, so it's not going to bubble up to the COL. To do this we need to break DOM2 event model somehow, right? What does HTML4 say about events on columns? (I'd guess nothing...)
The HTML 4.01 Transitional DTD satates: ... <!ELEMENT COLGROUP - O (COL)* -- table column group --> <!ELEMENT COL - O EMPTY -- table column --> <!ATTLIST TABLE -- table element -- %attrs; -- %coreattrs, %i18n, %events -- ... <!ENTITY % events "onclick %Script; #IMPLIED -- a pointer button was clicked -- ondblclick %Script; #IMPLIED -- a pointer button was double clicked-- onmousedown %Script; #IMPLIED -- a pointer button was pressed down -- onmouseup %Script; #IMPLIED -- a pointer button was released -- onmouseover %Script; #IMPLIED -- a pointer was moved onto -- onmousemove %Script; #IMPLIED -- a pointer was moved within -- onmouseout %Script; #IMPLIED -- a pointer was moved away -- onkeypress %Script; #IMPLIED -- a key was pressed and released -- onkeydown %Script; #IMPLIED -- a key was pressed down -- onkeyup %Script; #IMPLIED -- a key was released --">
keypress, keyup, keydown events should not work for non-focusable content, see bug 46042.

marking wontfix per bug 46042's comments. Colgroup is not a focasable element.

Actually, this is INVALID because there is no way the COL element could get the event (without breaking some standards issues). The text on which we create/try to create an event sends the event bubbling up, through TD -> TR -> TABLE. It will not, and it should not, go through COL or COLGROUP. I am changing the resolution, sorry for the spam...
