It is a little hard to get this right, since Apple doesn't have any standard HUD window styles and each application creates their own. But in general, the HUD windows (at least in the finder and iLife apps) seem to have a color of 65,65,65 when over white, which is roughly black at 75% opacity, although I'm not entirely sure how the shadow interacts with the transparency of the window. Our HUD windows are currently a bit lighter. The attached file shows our two panels, and example HUD panels from the Finder, and two from iWeb (which aren't even consistent with each other).

Fixed by bug 462650 (the background is part of the border image).
