When you delete messages in a IMAP account, TB creates a IMAP folder and puts the message there. With GMail, that means it is creating a tag -- not deleting. Besides, if you delete the message from the webmail program, it still shows up in TB and you have to delete it again there.
Why not check the IMAP folders named "Deleted Items" and "Trash" and move their contents to the local folder? Also, cause the delete to move items (not folders) to the local trash folder.

This is simply misunderstanding. I know it's confusing, but tb3 now has ui to help you. Not that gmail thinks you should use the trash folder with imap, but... (xref bug 400931.)
