I have used Thunderbird for years without problems.  Today however I cannot
open it.  When I try to login I get this message: "Sending of password did not succeed.  Mail server pop-server.rochester.rr.com responded:  Invalid user name or password.  I talked to roadrunner for several hours, they gave me a new password which didn't work and send it might be a bad Thunderbird file.

I want to confirm that I'm having the same identical bug.  There are several problems with this.  First, it won't store my password, so I have to enter it every time.  I check the box over and over, though I know it's not going to make a difference.  But it downloads my e-mails, THEN it sends me the error message: "Sending of password did not succeed.  Mail server [mail.my-isp.net] responded: Login failed."  I want to emphasize that the e-mail is downloaded.

passwords are reworked somewhat in version 3. can you try beta 4 which will be available in 1-2 weeks and report results?

 backup your profile before using.
 expect changes in the UI.

I suspect this in invalid. But if you still see this problem, a protocol log for imap or pop3 will help. Attach the log file to the bug. see https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging

If you want to test version 3 beta, http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/early_releases/ and make sure you backup your profile before running.  Note: version 3 still has are other password issues
