User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008101315 Firefox/8.10 (intrepid) Firefox/3.0.3 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008101315 Firefox/8.10 (intrepid) Firefox/3.0.3 Since I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 my entire machine randomly crashes several times a day. Normally it is when I am accessing something via Firefox. If Firefox is not open then it does not seem to crash. Looking in the messages file just before the restart there is normally a Firefox segfault here are a few examples: Nov 7 12:43:53 laptop kernel: [ 3276.942329] firefox[11537]: segfault at b7965a9e ip b7cab571 sp bf9552a4 error 4 in libc-2.8.90.so[b7c7d000+158000] Nov 7 12:45:07 laptop kernel: [ 3351.452053] firefox[11621]: segfault at b7a76a9e ip b7dbc571 sp bf8679a4 error 4 in libc-2.8.90.so[b7d8e000+158000] Nov 7 18:21:02 laptop kernel: [ 6871.819048] firefox[14111]: segfault at b7a98a9e ip b7dde571 sp bfb8a444 error 4 in libc-2.8.90.so[b7db0000+158000] Nov 8 10:22:46 laptop kernel: [ 1157.336669] firefox[8344]: segfault at b792ca9e ip b7c72571 sp bf81b924 error 4 in libc-2.8.90.so[b7c44000+158000] Nov 9 06:07:09 laptop kernel: [ 2765.532894] firefox[11723]: segfault at b7a9fa9e ip b7de5571 sp bff8f094 error 4 in libc-2.8.90.so[b7db7000+158000] Nov 9 06:08:47 laptop kernel: [ 2863.137587] firefox[11823]: segfault at b791ba9e ip b7c61571 sp bfc0cd04 error 4 in libc-2.8.90.so[b7c33000+158000] Nov 10 07:32:03 laptop kernel: [ 226.373710] firefox[7257]: segfault at b79aaa9e ip b7cf0571 sp bfb9bce4 error 4 in libc-2.8.90.so[b7cc2000+158000] and so on. There was nothing specific I was doing at the time. Sometime I had just clicked on a link, sometimes it was a few seconds as I was loading a page, sometimes Firefox was just open and I was not accessing it. Is there any other 'debugging' info source I can look at? It is very annoying as often I have other applications open and I lose unsaved data. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: See above, start firefox, use it for a while, it crashes.
The rules are simple: If the OS crashes then it's always the fault of the OS. If X crashes then it's X fault. If Firefox crashes then it's Firefox fault or the fault of a plugin or addon. Something is wrong if your whole system crashes. Please ask at the Ubuntu Support for help. If you fixed your system and only Firefox crashes then write a new bug report and add a stacktrace : http://developer.mozilla.org/En/How_to_get_a_stacktrace_for_a_bug_report
