Actual Results: link opens in same window
A left click on a link on Google search results pages always open in the same window, in any browser. You can do a middle click, Right click - Open Link in... or use a bookmarklet to override the page's code. You are using an old browser, it's better to use the latest.
If you go to the Google homepage, click on Preferences, is there a check mark in the box "Open search results in a new browser window"?

The option "Open search results in a new browser window" is not there any more. I'm now on v 1.5.0.12.
Here you can see that the option is present, tested with the latest Firefox version (Firefox 3) and a new profile on Windows XP: http://img514.imageshack.us/my.php?image=searchro5.png

(marking INVALID, because this wasn't a flaw in Firefox)
