User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.4) Gecko/2008102920 Firefox/3.0.4
Build Identifier: Fonts on MSN do not render well - hard to read
When viewed with Mozilla Firefox, the bulk of text on MSN and related sites does not render well. It is faint gray and blurry. When the same fonts are viewed with Microsoft Internet Explorer, they are blue and crisp. Why does Firefox not render these fonts well?
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. load www.msn.com, and try to read the articles, or any text other than the headlines.
2.
3.
Actual Results:
Faint and blurry text.
Expected Results:
The fonts should be rendered with the same color, brightness and clarity as when viewed with MS Internet Explorer.

I don't see any reason why this is TE; it's very likely the same fonts aren't chosen in both browsers. Over to Firefox:General for triage.

If this has been happening since 1.1, it's not likely to be 3.0 Branch. Please don't mess with flags on bugs unless you need to.

This is a mass search for bugs which are in the Firefox General component, are
UNCO, have not been changed for 500 days and have an unspecified version.
Reporter, can you please update to Firefox 3.6.10 or later, create a fresh profile, http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/managing+profiles, and test again. If you still see the issue, please update this bug. If the issue is gone, please set the status to RESOLVED > WORKSFORME.

I update every time an update to Mozilla is presented. This is a PROBLEM IN EVERY VERSION. Do you guys get crisp clear text rendering when YOU visit MSN? Also occurs when I visit my bank website.

No, I don't see any problems with font rendering on MSN. Can you please give a screenshot that shows this?

I have one - where do I paste it or attach it?

See: http://moneycentral.msn.com/detail/stock_quote?iPage=lqd&Symbol=$US:INDU
Let me know if the fonts on this page render well for you.

Thats not a screenshot. I don't see any problems on that page, but seeing as there are a bunch of different fonts and colors, I might not be looking at the one you are. a screenshot of the problem, compared to IE, would be very helpful.

Yes, I realize the link is not a screen shot. Like I asked in the reply previous to that, NOW/WHERE DO I PROVIDE A SCREEN SHOT ON THIS PAGE???
When I look at the page for which I provided the URL in the meantime, every line of the box labeled "Major Indices: US" is faint an blurry, barely readable, including the box heading. The box with heading "Market Talk With Jim Jubak message board" is similarly blurry and nearly unreadable. However, the words "GOP Hopes for NY Senate Seat" are crisp and clear (also, larger, of course). Everything within the box labeled "Market update 8:00am ET" is relatively faint and blurry. Even the larger font isn't as crisp as the previous reference.
Again - I can provide a screen shot, but I don't know where on this page I can paste it or otherwise attach it...

Do you now see what I have been trying to describe?
Huge difference - same page. This is just one example. Many pages display this way with Mozilla.

Were you able to see the difference? You don't see this when you access this site with Mozilla?

Brian, are you actually using the same font settings in both browsers, as I asked in comment 1? It certainly doesn't look like it to me.
I see a difference in the screenshots, sure, but I can't really help triage this much because I'm on a Mac and don't see this problem at all.

No that I've been able to see what I'm looking for, yes, there is a slight difference, mainly the Firefox fonts are more, I guess, bolder. But it is in no way more difficult to read, and it is not as pronounced as the screenshot.

I don't have the slightest idea how to set font settings in a browser. I've always assumed they were set by the site you are visiting. So, they are whatever they default to, because I certainly never have (knowingly) changed them...
Comment 20•15 years ago

I'm fairly certain the two browsers do not use the same default fonts, so that's certainly a suspect in why you see this much worse than Tyler does.
Someone should test this with both browsers set to their own defaults, as well as with both browsers set to the same font settings (or as close as possible), and see what changes.
I think the solution is ultimately "don't use fonts that look crappy", though, and that it's unlikely this is actually a bug in Firefox or Gecko.

I am fed up with Firefox. I have been using it for probably 6 years. I reported this almost 2 and a half years ago, and the problem remains. I did not change the fonts in the browser - so they are whatever the defaulted to. Contrary to what "Triage" asserts, this is not a "slight difference". Anyone can tell that by looking at the two screen shots. To be accurate, the difference in rendering the fonts is so much different with Firefox as to be UNREADABLE.
You can kiss this user goodbye because, as much as I dislike the idea, I am switching to IE, and I won't be coming back. You can chalk it up to "failure to take a users input seriously, and writing user input off as trivial."
I'm done.

As I stated in comment 20, please try the *default* fonts in both browsers and see if the problem persists.
Comment 23•14 years ago

I should point out that I was not seeing the issue, but i agreed the screenshots were not good looking. As Chris has been trying to say, this is likely an issues with default fonts.
Please read https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html, specifically points 1.2 and 1.3.

Just some additional comments.
1. Chris Lawson - this user is not "using" any fonts. I am saying Firefox is not rendering fonts on widely accessed websites, such as MSN.com, as the provided scteenshots examples illustrate. I never changed any settings related to fonts - I don't even know how or where to do that! And just to be clear, the screen shot I provided from Firefox is the way it appears when I view the site with Firefox, and it is most definitely not "bolder". It is so faint and blurry, it is in some cases unreadable! You tell me exactly what I have to change to make it MORE readable ("bolder") than with IE, and I'll do it. But, don't merely say, "change the fonts to the default". Provide a step by step - remembering these aren't sites that I am setting the fonts on, I am only viewing the sites with Firefox. I am not "using" any fonts. I am just viewing whatever the web pages present.
2. Tim (fmdeveloper) - I appreciate the follow up, but I don't know if it is still happening with Firefox 5. I no longer use Firefox because I was fed up with not being able to read websites with it. I'm just responding as a courtesy.
