Unfortunately, Thunderbird does not have an effective way to import local folders from its earliest versions, it can only inherit them. Therefore the most effective way to move your stuff from one machine to another is simply to copy the local folders folder. Yesterday I've found that the new version of Thunderbird does not recognize compacted folders of the previous versions (4 months to 2 years old). Everything is alright with the previous version. Of course i will try a trick to install the old version, to import them into the old version and then reinstall the new version over but this is not good. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Find compacted local folders one year old. 2.In account setting show to the new version the path to these folders. 3.Thunderbird will show empty folders. Actual Results: Thunderbird will show empty folders. Expected Results: Thousands of saved emails.
Compressing doesn't compress the file, it compacts the file. It doesn't change the format the file, compacting removes only the marked as deleted mails which are not shown in the UI anymore. You can try to remove the index files (.msf) and let thunderbird recreate them.
Thank you for your comment. Removing msf files does not help. Probably the bug is in the new compacting algorithm relative to the previous one. P.S.: By the way, it is not convenient that the subject requires to restart it to make the changes (location) for the local folder in effect. > Compressing doesn't compress the file, it compacts the file. > It doesn't change the format the file, compacting removes only the marked as > deleted mails which are not shown in the UI anymore. > > You can try to remove the index files (.msf) and let thunderbird recreate them.
Indeed, the problem was solved by installing version 188.8.131.52, making path to the local folders, and updating upto the current version. Therefore - bug - something is wrong.
I'm not quite sure what this issue is, but as Matti indicates it has nothing to do with compaction, so modifying summary. There is a lot missing in your "Steps to Reproduce:" - don't state "the process", all the things you saw, did and clicked on. And you don't say what version these files are from. Are these folders from suite/Seamonkey or Netscape? Version?
Summary: Compressing algorithm which compacts the folders does not recognize files of the previous version → does not recognize folder files of the previous version
