Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.18 (20081105)
This has continued to happen through several upgrades of Thunderbird. I don't use any of the standard password managers, instead I have a text file from which I copy & paste passwords. Each time I start Thunderbird, I can paste the password into the prompter, but after the initial retrieval of mail, it seems to forget the password and asks me to re-enter. (Usually when I want to send mail.)
At that point, I can't paste the password into the prompter, though I can manually type it. What I've discovered is that I can type gibberish, which will not be approved by the server, so TB will re-prompt, and that time, I'll be able to paste the password.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start TB from scratch, it prompts for a password, I paste it in. TB is fine.
2. Attempt to send new message. TB says "Mail Server Password required". (Does it think sending and receiving require different passwords?)
3. Attempt to paste password, no response (text doesn't appear.) Enter text via keyboard.
4. If password in step 3 was incorrect, mail sending fails. Try to send again, receive new prompt. First time, no response, but if you hit enter with an empty field, it prompts again, and this time pasting works, and you see an appropriate number of asterisks. Hit enter, and mail gets sent. Thereafter, TB can send and retrieve mail without re-prompting.
Actual Results:
Two problems:
1) TB asks for password twice.
2) The first time it asks in some situations, it doesn't accept pasted results, but on re-prompts, pasting is successful.

1) is invalid because Thunderbird contacts 2 different servers : Pop3 (incoming) and SMTP (outgoing) and each server needs a password and they can be different

comment 1 is correct
=> invalid (not a bug)
If you have other problems please note that Thunderbird 3 beta 2 has major changes including Bug 239131 Thunderbird should use the new password
manager, which includes numerous improvements

I realize that this was marked invalid, but I think it's noteworthy that this has been bothering me for almost two years, and now it's fixed. When I paste the password into the prompter for the Pop3 password, it is accepted and works the first time, and later when I try to send mail, I'm prompted for the SMTP password, and it gets accepted the first time. I no longer end up having to manually type my password.
