Thunderbird displays Bubble like junk characters in “Return Receipt (Displayed)”.

I am using Mozilla Thunderbird ver version 2.0.0.17 (20080914)
I forwarded one email at various addresses. I got read return receipt from recipients. I observed one Bubble like character in “Subject line”. Note that this charter was not a part of subject line when mail was sent by me. 

See the Image-1. This image display original mail , highlighted in blue color, which was sent and return receipts. The subject is “Fwd: Let us complain less and give more!”.Above this mail you will see Return Receipt (Displayed) mail.  You will observe a Bubble before “More”.

I opened the Return Receipt (Displayed) mail to read it. Here in Subject field , I observed lot of blank spaces before “More” , but bubble kind of character was not there. See the Image-2

It means In “Subject” field of Inbox , Thunderbird shows bubble like charter and when you open such mail , then in the Subject field of opened mail , spaces get displayed , instead of charter.

To examine further , I forwarded this Return Receipt (Displayed) email which is having bubble character to my own account. After receiving I observed not only two bubbles but also found that some word get  merged. See the image-3. You will observer not only two Bubbles , but also merging of two word.

And again , when I open this mail , I observed lot lot space characters. (Image-4)
 
Conclusion 1: Thunderbird displays bubble like characters in “Subject” field of Inbox.

Conclusion 2: Thunderbird replaces bubble like characters with spaces and merged the words in “Subject” field of opened mail.

And it goes on and on... 

Hope you will recognize it as problem.

I am attaching two files now. Please note that bubble is appearing in  “Subject” field of Inbox  not in mail 's "Subject" field , insted it is showing blan spaces.
To see the bubble please refer Image 1. The File1.eml and File2.eml are actual mail contents which shows Blank spaces in "Subject".

Correction :In File1.eml and File2.eml, you will notice merging of words in "Subject filed" as i mentioned in  problem. Here you will not see blank spaces.
( In my PC , I am able to see blank spaces in these "eml" files. It is not appearing in the uploaded files, viewing via IE browser. If you View these "eml" files in Thunderbird , you will able to see blank spaces)

Same problem as Bug 271312. See also Bug 467097.
A mailer, who uses HTAB in header folding, looks to be used multiple times in forwarding.

"Displayed glyph at [HTAB] position in Thread Pane" depends on UI font.
What font do you use as UI font? (OS setting)

I am using Windows Vista Business and I have not change its default font hence I believe it is Segoe UI. 
I am also attaching a file (font-setting-in-TB) , depicting the Font setting in ThunderBird.

I could observe "Bubble" for each HTAB at Thread Pane, with your test mail(Subjec: is in us-ascii. Not encoded), with Tb 2.0.0.14, on Japanese MS Windows XP SP3 where UI font=MS UI Gothic. Confirming.
But I couldn't observe problem with Tb trunk 2008/12/04 build, with your test mail, although I could still see U+FFFD for HTAB with test mail of Bug 467097(Subject: is UTF-8 encoded). It looks that HTAB is removed upon Thread Pane display when non-encoded us-ascii Subject: header.
Some improvements have been done?

To ssp(bug opener): Can you see the problem with Tb latest-trunk?

Yes!!I observed the problem with version 2.0.0.18 (20081105) , which I believe is latest as on 12/Dec/2008.I regularly updates TB.I run "Check for update"  feature of TB from "Help" and got this version. This version is showing me the Bubble like character.

Oh, I talked about Tb's latest-trunk (nighly build for next Tb 3).

(1) Create a mail folder on Tb 2(say TEST), and copy the mail to "TEST"
(2) Download latest-trunk Win32 ZIP build, and Unzip it. (Call it "Tb 3")
(3) Start Tb 3(thunderbird.exe -P), Create new profile,
    Create dummy POP3 account (Not use "Global Inbox").
(4) Copy file for "TEST" of Tb 2 to mail directory under profile for Tb 3
(5) Restart Tb 3, Check thread pane display by Tb 3.

OK!! I tried it with latest TB (thunderbird-3.0b2pre.en-US.win32.zip). The bubble charater is not appearing in this version. See the attached Image.

Congraturations.
Your case doesn't look to be occur on receint Tb trunk build.
However, Bug 467097(Subject: is UTF-8 encoded, displayed in U+FFFD) still remains.
