Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.18 (20081105)
although I have mail waiting in my mail server, it is not automatically uploaded or uploaded when I press the 'getmail' button. When I quit Thunderbird and restart, the mail is received normally. This only seems to happen after Thunderbird has been running for a while.
Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1.use thunderbird normally and leave it running
2.sometimes I'm surprised there has not been any new mail for a while.
3.I quit and restart thunderbird and all my new mail comes in, some that's been waiting for a while
Actual Results:
it acts like there is no new mail
Expected Results:
uploaded the mail.

Try starting Thunderbird in Safe Mode, and if that does not work, in a new profile.

3 Gmail IMAP accounts or 3 IMAP accounts on same server?
If yes, number of IMAP connectios can exceeds MAXPERIP of IMAP server, number of opened sockets can exceed limit.
same problem, but on Mac OSX, and problem only began approx. Feb,2009. Intermittent.
Only if I close Thunderbird and re-open it will new mail appear.

Is this about Gmail IMAP only? Comment #6 would suggest Earthlink too.
I have occasionally seen this (even with just a single Gmail IMAP account in a profile on trunk) when accessing Gmail with IDLE only. Running the same account with both IDLE and "Check for new messages every [10] minutes" seems to resolve the issue as a workaround. Nevertheless, if it's an interoperability issue, would be good to figure out what's going on.

Tb trunk(next Tb 3)? Or Tb branch(Tb 2.0.0.xx)?
rsx11m, if Tb trunk, read Bug 483859 Comment #12 for "new mail check after Bug 428266 & auto-sync", see Dependency tree for Bug 428266, and see also Bug 483859 Comment #21 and attached IMAP log with Gmail IMAP.

Thanks for the pointers, I yet have to dig may way through those bugs.
Yes, I'm using the trunk nightlies, offline syncing is disabled, and I'm only checking the Inbox for new mail (don't expect other folders to receive any).

To ccandjs@earthlink.net:
What is your base/evidence that your problem is really same problem as original problem of this bug? Why you can can say that symptom of your "Get Mails doesn't work until restart of Tb" is completely same(same condition/same cause/same solution) as original problem of Comment #0? Please note that bug reporter merely said about symptom of "Get Mails didn't work, and after restart of Tb, Get Mails worked", and that nothing is answered yet by bug reporter except "bug opener uses 3 IMAP accounts".
> HELP!!!!
To ccandjs@earthlink.net:
Here is bugzilla.mozilla.org for developers. If you need help, ask for help at appropriate place such as support forum(e.g. MozillaZine Thunderbird forum).
If you want to analyze your problem of Bug 485317, get IMAP log and check at least real IMAP level flow. And, if (and only if) Tb's fault is found by your log analysis, re-open your Bug 485317, with attaching log file to bug (never paste, please), with clear description about what happened/what is the problem/what is Tb's fault.

I'm the original reporter. I didn't report the bug to then be asked a lot of questions I can't answer. when I talk to our IT guys, they say that TB has always worked like this, that after a while it stops fetching new mail and you have to quit the app and start it again (and then the mail comes flowing in). I'm not surprised that other people are reporting the same bug. Is it a good clue that it occurs on the Mac and well as windows?
I now am fetching mail from only two mail accounts, one Gmail iMap, the other non-Gmail iMap. I still see this bug. I upgrade to every new version hoping it might go away.

I am not technical and don't understand a word of this jibberish. I was HOPING that the COMPANY (Mozilla itself) would solve this problem.
I HATE COMPUTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I'm taking myself off the cc list.
Also (new problem) I am now getting double e-mails, or partially completed e-mails along with the complete ones.
I'm going to switch companies (IF I'M ALLOWED TO DO THAT!!!) BOY, I HATE THIS!!!!!!

bobarms@gmail.com, do you use DHCP for your PC's IP address? If yes, does your DHCP server change IP address for your PC while Tb is running? If yes, see Bug 458827.

We use fixed-address DHCP and my machine never changes its IP address.

How about IMAP server's IP address. Is DNS round robin, clustering etc. used by the IMAP server(s)?
Note: Gmail's IMAP server uses it, and final IP addresses are frequently changed.

Is Dynamic DNS used in yor environment?
Does problem disappear by "disabling IDLE support" when problem occurs?
Will "disabling IDLE support" reduce frequency of your problem?

I disabled IDLE support and have not seen the bug again.
I wrote our systems guys asking about Dynamic DNS but have not heard back.
Lately I have started carrying an iPhone and when I have that on AND read mail on my PC, I see other problems that are likely caused by both systems updating the server. but the 'not fetching new mail' problem started long before I had the iPhone.

Could you check next? Will it work? Or restart of Tb is needed?
- Enable IDLE again, and use it daily.
- When problem occurs again, diable IDLE, and open IMAP folder again.

I'm not sure what you mean by:
"Could you check next? Will it work? Or restart of Tb is needed?"
I exit TB at the end of my work day and start TB on my home laptop when I get home, and then shut if off before coming to work (I try never to run it from both places). So I do start TB every morning.
I've re-enabled IDLE and will see how it goes.

Your "I disabled IDLE support" was executed when you experienced problem? And you could recover from the problem without restart of Thunderbird?
I so, no need to re-enable IDLE again. (I understood that you are not experiencing problem after you disable IDLE while Tb is normally running.)

Comment 21•16 years ago

No, I did not disable it while I was experiencing the problem. when I suspect that I have not gotten mail for a while, I quit out of TB and restart it. and sometimes the mail comes flowing in and sometimes there is no mail. I really have no way to know if TB should be reading mail (I guess I could log on using a web client to see if it knows about any mail). I have no way to force the problem to occur to test it..it just happens. I re-enabled IDLE by checking the box labeled 'use IDLE if your server supports it'. I generally exit out of TB when I leave work and start it again in the morning. I have not re-experienced the problem yet.

can you reproduce this using a current version of thunderbird?
if you are unable to reproduce, please close by setting stats to resolved, and resolution to WORKSFORME or another appropriate setting.
If you are able to reproduce, add new details, and a testcase if one does not already exist in the bug report.
