There is currently an API to find all pages/items with a particular anno name. This is useful for annos like "myext/starred", for example. It is not useful if your anno is "myext/guid", since all pages will have one.

So, It would be useful to have getPagesWithAnnotationValue(name, value) (and the same for items).

Currently the only way to do this without iterating over all items is to do SQL directly.
Summary: Add API to find a page/item with a specific anno/value combination → Add API to find a page or item with a specific annotation value combination

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.

No longer necessary for Sync, as far as I can see; I think we're pretty happy using SQL directly, referring to the moz_bookmarks.guid column. We don't use annos for GUID these days.

Leaving this bug open in case there are other consumers who care, but removing the blocking ref.
