Hi,
in gecko 1.8.1, you could install an installation for *all* xulrunner applications by placing them in [greDir]/extensions. This made it possible to install an extension once, and supporting a new application required only to modify install.rdf
Unfortunately, since #321237, XCurProcD resolves to [appliDir]/extensions, and that features does not work anymore.
If I have an application myapp in my home directory, gecko will search for extensions in
~/myapp/extensions
~/path/to/profile/extensions
~/.mozilla/extensions/{app-uuid}
/usr/share/mozilla/extensions/{app-uuid}
None of those directories allow me to install an extension globally once available for all xulrunner applications. As we can now use toolkit for targetApplication, having that feature back would be particularly handy.

XULRunner has been removed from the Mozilla tree: see https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/mozilla.dev.platform/_rFMunG2Bgw for context.
I am closing all the bugs currently in the XULRunner bugzilla component, in preparation for moving this component to the graveyard. If this bug is still valid in a XULRunner-less world, it will need to be moved to a different bugzilla component to be reopened.
