Most likely you ran a Firefox 3 pre-release build, alpha beta or rc.
Read http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+3+upgrade+switches+bookmarks+and+other+settings+to+older+version

I ran the latest version of Firefox downloaded from Mozilla

brian: your answer can't be an answer to comment#1.
You already wrote in comment #0 that you installed FF3.0.5 but that's not the point. The point is that you seem to have used a beta or alpha version of FF3 someday. FF3 is using a new bookmark format and the first time a FF3 is used it will import your FF2 bookmarks *once* and the alpha/beta version did that. Now you are missing the bookmarks that you added in FF2 in the meantime.

Would you please just follow the posted link in comment#1 and use the instructions there ?

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
