upon installation of mozilla update (that I do not request) a box appears "about_blank"

the box which is empty and will not go away, prevents me from using the mozilla browser (nothing clicks)

the only solution I've used so far is to do a "system restore" to a point before this headache began

Please try http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode 

You should upgrade to Firefox3 because Firefox2 is at the end of life and it will not get any additional bugfixes.
As we can't fix anything in FF2 anymore (because there will be no new release) and because this works for most users i will mark this wfm
