The deleted messages will stay no matter how many times Compact Folder is selected. I can attempt to check mail, attempt to undelete/delete messages and then try to compact again, but it sometimes still won't delete. I have to close Eudora, then restart, and then compact. IIRC, it occasionally did it in version b3, but it's quite often in b4. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
I think you are confusing Compacting with Expunging. Compacting only deals with the local mailbox file. Expunging deals with removing deleted messages from the server (and as a result, the local mailbox as well). Expunge is controlled in the account setting (Server Settings-> Clean Up ("Expunge" on Exit). This said, there is quite a bit of discussion going on regarding IMAP changes. I'll assign this to Dale who is dealing with IMAP stuff. He can close this if he likes.

Well, when I choose Compact (after selecting a message for deletion), the message disappears from both my local computer as well as any web folders through webmail, so I assume it is permanently gone. For this account, I do not have Expunge on Exit selected. Whatever Compact is supposed to do, it's not doing it consistently. I agree that probably what I actually want is Expunge. But how do you expunge without exiting?
The confusion between Compact and Expunge spills over from Thunderbird https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=236922 Compact should be relabeled as Expunge and should swap menu locations with Re-index. I and other of my customers have been misled by Compact, with disastrous results.
should reduce I think with a newer version. xref bug 479285 and its friends
