In the past couple days, I've had autoscroll get stuck turned on for me twice. In both cases, when I started it on a tab, it would not stop, even when I left clicked or middle clicked again. Closing the tab and hitting ctrl+shift+T would fix it for that tab. In one case, the icon was present in all tabs in the same place, and starting autoscroll in a new tab would not give an icon where the click was. In the other case, no icons showed at all.

Menus (File, Edit, etc) were not accessible when this happened.

One time, restarting Firefox fixed it. The other time, unmaximizing the window fixed it.

The first time this happened was maybe two or three days ago. Given the time between first sighting and second sighting, it's probably somewhere between 3 days old and a week or so.

I'm currently (this is after fixing it by unmaximizing) getting the following error ridiculously many times in the error console. I have no idea if it's related or not:
Error: [Exception... "'JavaScript component does not have a method named: "handleEvent"' when calling method: [nsIDOMEventListener::handleEvent]" nsresult: "0x80570030 (NS_ERROR_XPC_JSOBJECT_HAS_NO_FUNCTION_NAMED)" location: "<unknown>" data: no]

NoScript was installed about a week ago, so if it is an extension it could be that.

I would love confirmation that anyone else has seen this.
I've seen this a few times with Debian Iceweasel after upgrading it from 3.0.x to 3.5.x. Among the installed extensions are Adblock Plus, DOM Inspector, NoScript. I haven't seen it for some time now, though.
This affects me too, but even more severely. Sometimes while browsing pages with a lot of content (Such as Slashdot comment pages) it will get stuck on and not turn off unless I restart Xorg with CTRL+ALT+Backspace.
I think it has affected me since Firefox 3.5.x, but I'm not sure.

(For some reason my useragent string is just QuickTime/7.6.4, which I can't explain other than that I was watching some .movs earlier, so I'll just post my system details myself o_O)

I can confirm this issue. Currently using Firefox 3.6.10 on Arch Linux (i686). On some pages (e.g. http://bit.ly/9Be5BG), autoscroll gets stuck and all of X becomes unresponsive - it's possible to move the mouse cursor, but clicking on any control whether inside the Firefox window or elsewhere doesn't have an effect, the same with keyboard. The only solution is to wait until the page has scrolled to top or bottom; or switch to a virtual terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and do "pkill firefox".
I've seen this almost daily using Fx 3.6.10, .11 and .12. I can't close the tab or the browser or stop scrolling until the end of the page is reached. I use aptosid and Ubuntu Lucid and see it in both.

There is a launchpad bug for this...
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/566412
Happens on x86 FreeBSD (8.1, Firefox 3.6.12) too.
Seems that this issue was fixed along the way.
Not reproducible on: 48.0a1 Build ID 20160309030419, resolving as WFM.

I don't think this has actually been fixed, or there's been another regression. As recently as today I saw this issue again, on Firefox 83, Fedora 33. I'll note that web renderer, hw compositing, opengl compositing, and webgpu are all disabled so these features are presumably unrelated. Off main thread painting is enabled.

Hardware wise the machine has an AMD 3950X, Nvidia RTX 2080 (driver version - 455.45.1.0). The monitor refresh rate is also 144hz.

This issue happens to me on pages that feature infinite scroll, e.g. new reddit, and twitter. It's very rare however, I only see it maybe once a month, and I've seen it with that frequency for years -- though anecdotally it did seem worse in the past.

I think the one thing that has improved, for whatever reason in previous versions it would take much longer for Firefox to get out of this broken state where auto scroll is locked in on infinite scroll pages. Previously it was a pretty major inconvenience, now it's minor, it doesn't really last long enough for me to realize "it's happening" and try to open a menu, but it's still noticeable enough to make me go "what the heck?"
