User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.8.1.20) Gecko/20081217 Firefox/2.0.0.20 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.8.1.20) Gecko/20081217 Firefox/2.0.0.20 After a presumable crash (can't reproduce if it was a crash) the bookmarks.html lost a lot of the bookmarks. I recoverd a back-up of the bookmarkbackup folder but this back-up just contains about half of all bookmarks and doesn't end with the typical syntax of html. The rest appears as not displayable question marks. Though the file is 1.71 MB but 721049 characters are not readable with unicode utf-8. Screenshot of the corrupted bookmarks.html: http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/6458/ff21zk0.jpg Syntax should end like this: http://img70.imageshack.us/img70/9020/ff11pe4.jpg Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce Tried to import the broken bookmarks file with latest Firefox 3.05 but only those bookmarks have been imported, which can be read with any simple html-editor.
Summary: Broken bookmark file → Broken bookmark file - bookmarks.html contains uncompiled html syntax
We can not fix any errors in FF2 anymore because FF2.0.0.20 is the last release. and because of such issues we switched away from bookmarks.html with FF3.0.5 marking wontfix because FF2.x is at the end of life.

those are almost certainly null bytes, and they'd happen if the app or system crashed before flushing data. newer geckos try to be more careful about such things....
All users are urged to upgrade to Firefox 3 as soon as possible. Firefox 3 offers many improvements over Firefox 2, and your issue may already be resolved in the newest version. You can download it from http://www.getfirefox.com. If you are still seeing the issue after upgrading, feel free to read http://quality.mozilla.org/bug-writing-guidelines, and reopen this bug with the information from that link.

I'm looking forward to upgrade to Firefox 3, but I thought it may be reproduceable with FF2. That's way I haven't updated it yet. Any hints where I get to know how FF2 creates those bookmark.html files? I was searching for a crash log but couldn't find anything.
As matti said, Firefox 3 totally changed the bookmark files, and firefox 2 is not supported, so it does not really matter if the issue exists on ff2, FF3 should not have it. If this does not happen in 3, it does not matter.
