The problemoccured after initial installation of Thunderbird. The message delete button on the tool bar did not work. I could not make it display images within messages, and choices in the drop down lists were greyed out. I went back after a reboot of the OS to verify and get more detail and everything was working as it should. The reboot cured whatever the problem was.
