User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008120122 Firefox/3.0.5
Build Identifier: Shredder/3.0b2pre
If I mark a newsgroup thread as Watched, the indicator icon shows up immediately. However, the next time I come back and select that same newsgroup, watched threads no longer have the icon when new messages are sent to the marked thread. If I come back and select the newsgroup a third time (and every time thereafter), the Watch icon is present on watched threads.
The View settings I have are Threads>Unread and Messages>All. I also have Sort By set to Threaded.
This is a very old bug that I've seen in versions of TB going back to at least 1.0. I tried looking for some recent bug report that documented it, but all I could find was Bug 267594 one from the 0.9 timeframe (which was marked as fixed)
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Mark a newsgroup thread as watched and make sure all messages in that thread are marked as Read.
2. Post a reply to the thread, or wait for someone else to post a reply to that thread.
3. Un-select the newsgroup (for example, by selecting another newsgroup).
4. Select the original newsgroup again
Actual Results:
The thread that was marked as watched will show the new reply, but it will not have the watched icon.
If you un-select and re-select the newsgroup again, the icon will re-appear.
Expected Results:
After re-selecting the newsgroup the first time, the reply should have the "watched thread" icon.

There seem to be a number of people who reported this over the years, so even though I understand the difficulty of debugging something you can't reporduce, I feel this should be easy enough to reproduce because it's been reported for a long time across many versions.
Would it help to attach a profile that includes a newsgroup account and the settings necessary to reproduce this? I'm quite sure I can produce such a profile because I AWLAYS see this, using at least 3 different versions of TB on at least 3 different OSes (Win2k, Win XP, and OS X). Would that help move this issue forward?

Eric, have you tried this with TB 3.0 beta 2?

I take a nightly build about once every other week or so. My current About dialog says Shredder 3.0b3pre, but I saw this with 3.0b2, too.

sadly I haven't paid close attention, but pretty sure I still see this. and yet, I can't reproduce on first try if I use steps of comment 0. But if I notice it again I'll confirm the bug, even if I don't have steps. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4pre) Gecko/20090831 Shredder/3.0b4pre
Eric, if it's gone for you from trunk builds feel free to close.

I was not able to quickly find the nightly builds page, but I did reproduce it easily using the beta3 build. Here is a short screencast that shows it: http://www.screencast.com/t/QvAjbdxm4R

nice screencast. I am able to reproduce ... steps I used per video:
1. set view threads all
2. Mark thread as watched and make all messages newsgroup read
3. compose reply
4. set view threads unread
5. Post reply
6. leave newsgroup by selecting another newsgroup
7. wait a bit, select the original newsgroup
Actual Results:
new message seen but no watch indicator on thread. Might be a dupe, but too tired to look

To add to comment 7...
Do View All ... the icons appear.
Do View Unread ... the icons stick (for now)
ref: Joshua's bug 504020 comment 4 "The icons are only displayed at the root of the thread,"
(In reply to Wayne Mery (:wsmwk) from comment #7)

not a duplicate. however, xref
Bug 504020 - TB doesn't show watch/ignore thread indicators in menus
Bug 207862 - Incorporate thread views ("Watched Threads with Unread", etc.) into MailViews dropdown list
Bug 244680 - Need ability to filter view based upon 'watched' parameter

Still reproducible with the STR from comment 7. One of the many issues involving the "Threads with unread" special view…
