1. Change title of page. New title "Firefox Notices"
2. Update page to look like screenshots captured in Harvey's blog (http://lockshot.wordpress.com/2008/09/17/licensing-proposal-notice-page-screen-shot/)
3. Have a link on this page to the EULA page. Change the lead in to say: "As of Firefox 3.0.[x} users no longer have to agree to an end-user license agreement (EULA) to download Firefox. However, if you downloaded an earlier version of Firefox, you did agree to the terms of a EULA. These EULAs are available for your reference. If you have Firefox 3.0.[x} or a later version, please see our Firefox Notices page."
I have to confirm the version number in which the "About:Rights" notice became available.

Assigning this one to Steven.
Catherine, can you let him know what the priority level is? As in, when should this be live?

Given the level of controversy around us having EULAs for Firefox, I think we need to have this new page available soon. Is the end of this week possible?
Also, John, do you think we should have a link on the Firefox page to the Firefox Privacy Policy and the new Notice Page?
Thanks.

Confirmed the version number. 3.0.[x] should be 3.0.5.

I can turn this around in a day. However, I'm not entirely clear on what is to be done. Is this a new page that replaces the old EULA page (and links to an archived copy of the EULA? If so, that might look good in a right-sidebar (the text from issue #3 in comment #1.
What text lives inside that "Mozilla Website Services Agreement" box? Is that up anywhere yet? Thanks.

Why not link to about:rights (only works on Firefox 3.0.5+, but still, it works)...?

Catherine - I just wanted to ping to remind that I need a bit more information on this bug (see comment #4). I'm not in a rush, but I wanted to make sure that we weren't both waiting for eachother.

Steven, thanks for the ping. John and I need to get together to decide how the design should work and then we can give you clearer instructions.

Steven, Tara is working on the design and she'll be working with you on this since John is out of town.

At the bottom (or in a side bar) of the About:Rights page, include the following:
"If you have an version of Firefox earlier than 3.0.5, please see the Mozilla End-User Licensing Agreement [link to http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/legal/eula/]"

Hello! Steven I created a quick flow chart (mainly to help myself understand how these pages connect) but also a way for us to talk about this with a visual reference.
I think the best way to do it is placing the text in a side bar as you suggested. But if that's too time consuming, we can place it in the bottom as well. I'm not sure if the side bar area is something you can create on your own, or need design help with - so, let me know if I can help with that.
Referring to the attached image:
I've highlighted the areas that need updated text in orange. The light orange box is an alternative area to place the text and links.
Text A: (from comment #9)
"If you have an version of Firefox earlier than 3.0.5, please see the Mozilla
End-User Licensing Agreement [link to
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/legal/eula/]"
Text B: (from comment #1)
"As of Firefox 3.0.[x} users no longer have to agree to an end-user license
agreement (EULA) to download Firefox. However, if you downloaded an earlier
version of Firefox, you did agree to the terms of a EULA. These EULAs are
available for your reference. If you have Firefox 3.0.[x} or a later version,
please see our Firefox Notices page."
Let me know if I can help answer any questions...

Tara - the flow chart is quite helpful. Could you also specify the URLs for each page in the flow chart. The one page that I'm confused about is the Firefox Notices Page. Is this a new page? If so, what should the URL be? Thanks.

Hi Steven. I believe it is a new page. I don't have a specific URL in mind, and am not exactly sure what it should be. Perhaps you can help with that?
Something like:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/legal/privacy/firefox-notices
or
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/legal/privacy/notices/firefox
Please let me know. I'm also on IM.

Catherine (or Harvey) would you be able to attach the text for the Firefox Notices Pages? I have them in PNG format through Harvey's blog ( http://lockshot.wordpress.com/2008/09/17/licensing-proposal-notice-page-screen-shot/ ) but not the actual text. Steven is prepping the pages and once we have the text, we're good to go.

Ok, the Notices page and the other text updates are setup in trunk (r22171). However, the actual text on the notices page is still missing.
You can preview the page on Trunk here: https://www-trunk.stage.mozilla.com/en-US/legal/privacy/notices-firefox/

Thanks Steven.
It seems like the source files are with Slater, along with the final text (Catherine only has earlier iterations of the text). John is out of the office until tomorrow, so I'm sure he'll send those over as soon as he can.
Harvey, if you happen to have the final text for those pages (or the source files) that would help us get this done today.
Thanks

See current text below: Also available at about:rights in the browser address bar. Is this what you're looking for.
About Your Rights
Mozilla Firefox is free and open source software, built by a community of thousands from all over the world. There are a few things you should know:
* Firefox is made available to you under the terms of the Mozilla Public License. This means you may use, copy and distribute Firefox to others. You are also welcome to modify the source code of Firefox as you want to meet your needs. The Mozilla Public License also gives you the right to distribute your modified versions.
* Mozilla does not grant you any rights to the Mozilla and Firefox trademarks or logos. Additional information on Trademarks may be found here.
* Privacy policies for Mozilla's products may be found here.
* Firefox also offers optional web site information services, such as the SafeBrowsing service; however, we cannot guarantee they are 100% accurate or error-free. More details, including information on how to disable the services, can be found in the service terms.
Mozilla Firefox Web Site Services
Mozilla Firefox uses web site information services ("Services"), such as the SafeBrowsing service, that are available for your use with this binary version of Firefox as described below. If you do not want to use the Services or the terms below are unacceptable, you may disable the SafeBrowsing service by opening the application preferences, selecting the Security section, and unchecking the options for "Tell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected attack site" and "Tell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected forgery"
1. Mozilla and its contributors, licensors and partners work to provide the most accurate and up-to-date phishing and malware information. However, they cannot guarantee that this information is comprehensive and error-free: some risky sites may not be identified and some safe sites may be identified in error.
2. Mozilla may discontinue or change the Services at its discretion.
3. You are welcome to use these Services with the accompanying version of Firefox, and you have all the rights necessary to do so. Mozilla and its licensors reserve all other rights in the Services. These terms are not intended to limit any rights granted under open source licenses applicable to Firefox and to corresponding source code versions of Firefox.
4. The Services are provided "as-is." Mozilla, its contributors, licensors, and distributors, disclaim all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties that the Services are merchantable and fit for your particular purposes. You bear the entire risk as to selecting the Services for your purposes and as to the quality and performance of the Services. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of implied warranties, so this disclaimer may not apply to you.
5. Except as required by law, Mozilla, its contributors, licensors, and distributors will not be liable for any indirect, special, incidental, consequential, punitive, or exemplary damages arising out of or in any way relating to the use of Firefox and the Services. The collective liability under these terms will not exceed $500 (five hundred dollars). Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain damages, so this exclusion and limitation may not apply to you.
6. Mozilla may update these terms as necessary from time to time. These terms may not be modified or cancelled without Mozilla's written agreement.
7. These terms are governed by the laws of the state of California, U.S.A., excluding its conflict of law provisions. If any portion of these terms is held to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining portions will remain in full force and effect. In the event of a conflict between a translated version of these terms and the English language version, the English language version shall control.

Hi guys. I'm back from my trip now...let me know how I can help with this. As far as the source files referred to in comment #20 go, there actually aren't any (Steven has been making the edits directly to the code). If there's anything else I can supply, just let me know.

What's the status on this? Wikipedia editors won't let change the Mozilla Firefox article to say we aren't under the EULA anymore because our website still says we are under it in multiple places. :/
Comment 25•17 years ago
|
||
If that's the main point, our actual downloads don't include EULAs and include the About Right texts. No doubt this needs to be fixed, but it would seem the actual real downloads would account for something.
Comment 26•17 years ago

Your actual real downloads (I checked FF3.0.7, which is the newest stable version of FF at the moment) still include the following text in about:license : "Official binaries of this product released by the Mozilla Corporation are made available under the corresponding EULA."
See http://bonsai.mozilla.org/cvsblame.cgi?file=mozilla/browser/base/content/overrides/app-license.html&rev=1.2

There should not be any reference to EULA. The title should be about:rights, not about:license.

This is no longer true in FF3.5, since the strings has been changed. See bug 417687 (see my comment in bug 430741 comment 9 for a summary). Moreover, bug 430741 may change the strings again.
FYI: related bugs about EULA: bug 464994, bug 476920.
