When I start up b5, it doesn't check for new mail.  
Nor does it auto check email every 15 mins.
The box in Acct settings is checked in both cases.

Hmm, works just fine for me. If it really does not work for you, please reopen bug and include some details. Screen shots of the settings (Server Settings) would be helpful as it shows the mail check settings as well as whether this is POP or IMAP.
