When I minimize, I get the browser icon for mail. They need to be different
(polish).
Nominating for nsbeta3. This is a border case, but I am verging towards
nominating than not.

The icon you see in win is the mozilla.exe icon. mozilla.exe opens documents for
the browser, mail and the other components. you can't assign icons to the docs
to get around this because win assigns the same icon to all docs of the same
type. bug 43647 is related to this bug. This bug is a windows bug not a mozilla
bug. Does anybody know a Win workaround for this bug?
This would be fantastic if we could have this. cc'ing german because I think he
has another bug for this. cc'ing hyatt to ask if this is even possible in the
current XP Toolkit.

I have most of the icons ready, but only for the Netscape 6 branded version.
Mozilla of course should have their own.
fyi: bug http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28733 is for creating the
Netscape icons.

mark nsbeta3+ per mail triage. selmer was supposed to have filed a dup bug on
this. I can't find it.

this is really a dup of 57576...so feel free to mark it as such, unless you
(seth) are working on this.
clearing milestone, m17 and m18 are meaningless now. these need to be triages
along with the rest.

It looks like a dup. And it looks like we aren't going to get support for this.

I'd prefer if this weren't a dupe.

The system will be created to support this, and we should just use this to
track the mailnews fragments.
you are right. I misread the other bug and thought it would get done for us.

cc'ing ssu.

I think he has a fix in hand for this.

ssu, feel free to take this bug from me.
code to show different icons when minimized and for the system menu icon (top
left corner of a window) is already in place as far as I am aware.

bugs:
 http://bugscape.netscape.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3409 (fixed)
 http://bugscape.netscape.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5022 (fixed)
 http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84311 (waiting on sr=/a=)

all help fix this bug. Ns is working now (I checked in a fix last night to it).
Mozilla still needs icons.

You can test to see if this feature is working by simply finding some icons and
copy them into:

  ...\mozilla\chrome\icons\default

create the path if it does not exist. The filenames for the icons that are
currently being used for ns are the following (but not limited to):

  abcardWindow.ico
  addressbookWindow.ico
  editorWindow.ico
  messengerWindow.ico
  msgcomposeWindow.ico
  profileWindow.ico

simply make sure the new icons (hopefully each one different from each other)
are named as such in that directory.

I'm not sure who in mozilla.org is the supplier of images/icons.

Trunk build 2001-07-13-04: WinMe
It appears that different icons are displaying for the Browser and Mail when
they are minimized. Should be be marked Worksforme or Fixed?
I'm running the 2001071508 build (I'm clueless if this is a Trunk
build or not) - mozilla-win32-installer-sea.exe - and I don't see
different icons for mail/news. The same ole' lizard as always.

I install new releases on top of old ones - perhaps I need to do
a clean install?

Tom
20010716 builds (both trunk and 0.9.2 branch) with WinME. I checked both with
modern and classic themes. The icons for browser and mail windows are still
identcal "blue worm" ones.

Ninschka, can you attach a screenshot? I'll attach one with the boring ble worm
seen still on today builds for comparson.
Moz buil 2001-07-16-04: WinMe
I also see the same icons for the Mozilla builds. You don't have to do a clean
install. "Trunk" refers to Netscape builds so this appears to be a moz specific
issue. Sorry for the confusion.
Ninoschka: wrong. Trunk is the mainstream Mozilla code. Branches are, well...
branches: versions of code cut off from the trunk to prepare for a release (only
chosen fixes go into a branch after the cutoff date). The next Netscape release
will be probably based on mozilla0.9.2 branch. So where have you seen the
different icons?
Commercial Trunk is where the icons are different.
Mozilla Trunk is where the icons are the same.

Does this make more sense? I'll be more precise with the terminology next time :-)
I think it will make sense if the icons that are created for mozilla be based on
the classic theme, since Mozilla uses this be default and since NS 6.1 already
uses ones based on Modern...
Sorry about my ignorance, but doesn't this bug somehow belong/depend to
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=73712?

In case it was not an error but enemy action I voted for this bug. Try removing
me from that list ;-)
This is fixed in the nightly build 19 Dec
see bug 73712
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=73712

Using 1.0rc1, the icons are all the same. This is a real pain as it makes it
very hard to quickly alt-tab to the right part of Mozilla (mail, browser etc) in
Windows. Is this likely to get fixed before the final 1.0 release?
This is not fixed in RC2. Just FYI....
Not fixed in v1.0 either. Not a p1 bug, for sure, but qualifies as a pA bug
(that's a pain in the a** bug).
This is really annoyng. As for the sollution, I can only tell it exists. Outlook
and Outlook Express both show different icons for the Application Windows and
for the messages, check it out.
And it should be easily fixed.
Comment #20 http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47779#c20 tells you how
to do it. I have used this technique to test a different icon and it works.
All it seems to need is a graphical type person to create the icon and put it in
place.
Why not just use the existing icons that are displayed at the lower right hand
corner of the browser window? This has several benefits, including:
1. Another set of icons does not need to be created.
2. It provides more visual consistency.
3. No additional work would need to be done for other browser themes.

You might still need to design icons for a couple of other windows (the download
manager window comes to mind).
Oops, I meant that you should reuse the icons in the lower LEFT hand corner.
One concern about using the lower-left icon[s] is that the are all 16x16 pixels,
ideally we want both 32x32 and 16x16 sizes for each icon to be shown. In Windows,
the 16x16 is shown on the taskbar, the 32x32 is shown in "coolswitch"
(alt-tabbing). If there is only a 16x16 available for the app, then the icon is
resized for coolswitch, which looks a bit shabby.

The lower left icons would be a good starting point though.
I've just attached a potential icon for use as the MailNews app icon. The .ICO file
contains both 16x16 and 32x32 versions at 256 colors, and is based on the mail
envelope icon found in the toolbar of MailNews in the Modern theme (which is also
the same icon, albeit smaller, in the lower left of any Mozilla window).

You can try it out by copying the messengerWindow.ico file into your
mozilla\chrome\icons\default directory (most likely you'll need to create the
icons\ and default\ subdirectories first). Restart the MailNews component and it
should be in use.

Alternately if you want a quick peek at the icons, here's a GIF:

www.misrule.org/~mm/mozexample.gif

Let me know what you think.
Joel, that icon looks OK in the larger icon, but it is unidentifiable in the
smaller one. The icon in the lower left hand corner of the browser for email is
much cleaner and easier to figure out what it's for.
currently mozilla.org has requested that people not submit or commit art. the
mail icon would be art. Until mozilla.org resolves its art licensing issues,
discussion in this bug or any related bugs is absolutely useless.

The issue is purely political/legal, and once that is resolved these bugs can
be easily fixed. Please don't comment unless you happen to have news from the
lawyers representing mozilla.org.
Got it. I hope what I'm about to post is not therefore a problem :)

This is just for people who find this bug annoying and want some kind of fix, and
it should not be considered an official submission in any way. This is just a
reference to a bit of work I've done personally to cope with this minor annoyance
until a Real Fix can occur.

http://www.misrule.org/~mm/mozicon.html

The small icon is now just the envelope, the large icon's envelope no longer
has round edges. Enjoy, or not, at your discretion :)

as long as we're fixing this.. why not have a "newmail" mail icon and a "nonewmail" mail icon?
(see bug 137462 for more details on last post)
Shouldn't this be Resolved - Fixed? Using 1.1b, my mail icon is now different
than my browser icon.

1.1b (2002072204) on Win2K
In answer to my own question, see
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=73712#c137

Has that been fixed, and if so, shouldn't this be Resolved - Fixed?

No longer depends on: stopthewhining
Resolution: --- → DUPLICATE
Duplicate, seems fair, I agree. (you can reopen if you disagree)
Marking as verified.

Further reasons, i like explanations ...

Although the other bug (bug 73712 alias stopthewhining <chuckle>) is a later
number it contains more information and has a broader scope than just the Mail
icon, and a seperate bug report just for the MailNews App seems unnecessary.
(i had totally forgotten about this as i have been happily using one the
suggested workarounds for ages, i think it was a just a simple theme even packed
in an XPI but i cannot rember which comment it was mentioned in)
Status: RESOLVED → VERIFIED
the main reason I duped it to that bug is that that was the one where the icon
was added, so I duped in spite of the higher number.
